The San Diego Padres added another outfielder just before the All-Star break, signing Dustin Harris to a minor league deal, according to the team’s transaction log on MLB.com.
Harris, 27, has already made the rounds this season. He spent time in the majors with both the Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros, appearing in 17 big league games overall. In that stretch, he went 10-for-43 with five RBIs and an OPS of .636.
His path to San Diego has been a long one. The then-Oakland Athletics took Harris in the 11th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, but he didn’t stay there long before being traded to the Texas Rangers in September 2020.
Harris climbed through the Rangers’ system and finally reached the majors at the end of the 2024 season. He got into two games and went 2-for-6 with one home run and three RBIs. He then started the 2025 season back in Triple-A, got called up in April and played in 16 games, was designated for assignment, stayed in the organization, and later returned in September for three more games.
Across those 19 games in 2025, Harris hit 8-for-40 with one home run, two RBIs and an OPS of .606.
After the season, the Rangers removed him from the 40-man roster and he elected free agency. He next signed a minor league deal with the White Sox and opened this year with them, playing in six games before being designated for assignment in April.
The Astros claimed him off waivers and gave him an 11-game look in the majors. He was then designated for assignment again, cleared waivers and elected free agency before re-signing with the White Sox on another minor league deal.
Chicago released Harris in the first week of July after he opted out of his contract, and that opened the door for the Padres to bring him in.
At Triple-A with the White Sox organization this year, Harris hit .312 with six home runs, 26 RBIs and an OPS of .886 over 45 games.
He brings defensive versatility, too. Harris has major league experience at all three outfield spots, and in the minors he has also played first base and third base.
