Victor Wembanyama’s summer work has taken him back to a familiar place: the gym with Hakeem Olajuwon.
A recent post from CAA’s Richard Felder showed Wembanyama alongside Olajuwon and Kel’el Ware, the 22-year-old center who just moved from Miami to Milwaukee in the Giannis trade. The short video was captioned, “A Day At The Office,” and showed the three posing for a photo, with Olajuwon looking like he had gotten a solid workout in and Wembanyama barefoot beside him.
For Wembanyama, this is just the latest stop in a packed offseason. He signed a huge contract extension and left money on the table to help the team build and maintain a roster that can compete.
He also landed the cover of 2K27, and reportedly pushed to have his teammates included too. Beyond that, he went to the World Cup, attended Fanatics Fest, and recently worked out with his new teammate Tobias Harris at De’Aaron Fox’s place.
Wembanyama has never hidden how much he values learning from different voices. He’s spent time with legends inside the Spurs’ practice facility, scientists at NASA and monks in the Shaolin temple. Last summer’s detours included work with Kevin Garnett and Olajuwon, whom he first met at the NCAA Championship earlier that year.
Speaking to ESPN, Wembanyama described how quickly Olajuwon opened up to him. “Right away he was very friendly and he told me right away that he wanted to share what he had what he knew,” Wembanyama said.
“All the footwork stuff, things that look easy but aren't, but he makes them easier. But more than that, it was the advice that comes with experience.
Nothing can replace experience.”
The respect runs both ways. Wembanyama also recalled the message Olajuwon gave him early on, and it stuck.
“You don't need to wait to win,” Wembanyama relayed. “You can do it right away.
If you're that good you're gonna make your team win regardless.”
That belief has aged pretty well. By the end of the next season, Wembanyama had taken his team to the NBA Finals.
After becoming the first ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, he said, “It means everything,” he said. “I'm smiling because I was just reminding myself of the time I was at Hakeem's...
I was looking at a plaque that said 'All-Time Blocks Leader,' right? And he just looked at me and said, 'You're gonna beat that one day.'
So, you know, one step at a time.”
Their connection came up again during the playoff run. After Wembanyama put up 39 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals, he was told that only Shaq, Kareem and Hakeem had ever done that in a playoff game.
His response said plenty. “It's good to be along with the big fellas,” he said with a smile.
“I had to resort to some things that Hakeem taught me in the fourth quarter, especially that spin fadeaway over Rudy [Gobert].”
Olajuwon’s résumé is already beyond dispute, built on back-to-back titles, elite rim protection and the Dream Shake. For Wembanyama, adding that kind of post-game knowledge can only help as his own game keeps expanding.
And yes, there’s still something a little surreal about it all. The greatest player in Rockets history is helping tutor the Spurs’ franchise centerpiece, the same player who once celebrated Houston missing out on him in the draft lottery. But greatness tends to recognize greatness, no matter the jersey.

Victor Wembanyama Just Became Even Scarier For The Spurs
Victor Wembanyama spent last season looking more and more comfortable where the game is tightest, at the rim, and the results showed up in both volume and efficiency. Bigger, better-connected teammates helped make that possible, and Stephon Castle emerged as a particularly useful passer in that mix, feeding Wembanyama on lobs and helping turn more possessions into easy finishes instead of forced looks.
The next step for San Antonio is less about asking Wembanyama to do more and more about making sure he does the right mix of things. He trimmed back his three-point attempts to lean into inside scoring, but the Spurs will want that balance to keep evolving so defenses cannot simply load up on one area of the floor. If he keeps punishing teams at the rim while finding a more natural rhythm from outside, the matchup problem he already is gets even harder to solve. [Read more 🡒]
Spurs Starter Just Made A Powerful Statement About His Future
Keldon Johnsons new three-year extension gives the Spurs another layer of stability around a player who has already become much more than a fill-in starter. Since landing in San Antonio after his brief stop with Philadelphia, Johnson has carved out a real role, turning himself into a dependable presence and one of the most productive perimeter shooters in the franchises recent history.
The deal also reflects how strongly Johnson has embraced San Antonio off the court, where he has repeatedly pointed to his connection with the community. After setting Spurs records for threes in a season and in a single game, he is now locked in financially for the next stretch, and the only real question left is how deep this relationship can go. Victor Wembanyama Is Already Setting A New Spurs Standard
Victor Wembanyama has spent the Spurs offseason doing more than just getting ready for year three. He was seen working out with Tobias Harris, a notable sign of how quickly San Antonios franchise centerpiece is trying to build chemistry with a new teammate while also pushing his own game forward. For a team still shaping its identity around Wembanyama, those kinds of offseason habits matter almost as much as what happens when the games start.
Harris brings the kind of veteran experience that can be useful for a player already operating on a different level physically and creatively. The fit also hints at a chance for Wembanyama to keep refining the parts of his scoring that will matter most as defenses keep adjusting to him, including how he creates his own shot and finds efficient ways to score. For the Spurs, it is another reminder that their standard is being set by the player who is already acting like the one everyone else has to follow. [Read more 🡒]
