Wembanyama Is Chasing The Physical Edge Spurs Fans Want To See

Victor Wembanyama is transforming his game with innovative training techniques, blending traditional basketball regimens with rugby to enhance his court presence.

Victor Wembanyama’s offseason has turned into its own kind of basketball subplot, and this summer the focus is squarely on one thing: getting stronger.

Wembanyama has built a reputation for unusual summer work, from training with NBA legends to spending time with Shaolin monks. Last offseason, while he was dealing with the mental fallout of having his second NBA season derailed by blood clots, he went to China to clear his head and sharpen his perspective. He also leaned on Kevin Garnett as a sounding board while working on his intensity.

This year, the approach looks different. Wembanyama has been open about putting more emphasis on the physical side of his game, and he and several Spurs teammates went to France for a week of hard workouts. Now he’s taken that a step further with a new training routine.

One of the more unusual pieces of that routine has been rugby. France may live and breathe soccer first, with basketball, tennis and handball all trailing behind, but rugby still has a solid foothold there. Wembanyama spent time with France’s rugby team in an effort to toughen up and make sure he isn’t getting pushed around.

“To everyone’s surprise, the Frenchman took part in several drills during on-field training sessions, but also fully immersed himself alongside the Provence Rugby group, sharing the players’ day-to-day life," reported L'Équipe's Maxime Aubin.

That kind of full buy-in fits the pattern. Last summer, Wembanyama completely immersed himself in the Shaolin temple, eating, reading and training with the monks. This summer, the setting is closer to home, but the mindset appears just as committed.

Whether the work shows up as added muscle remains to be seen. What’s already clear is that Wembanyama was plenty physical in the postseason, getting into it with Naz Reid, Jalen Brusnon and Mitchell Robinson to the point that he was labeled a “dirty player.”

Giannis Just Gave Wembanyama Fans A New Reason To Debate Him

Giannis Antetokounmpo has found a fresh way to needle Victor Wembanyama, and it has nothing to do with a rim or a ball. Instead, the Bucks star issued a playful one-on-one challenge that would move the battle from the court to a chessboard, tapping into the Spurs big mans well-known love of the game and reminding everyone that both players have a strong competitive streak.

For Spurs fans, it is the kind of offbeat crossover that still feels on brand for Wembanyama, whose interests have already made him stand out beyond basketball. Antetokounmpo sounded confident in his own chances, but there is no sign the matchup will actually happen, which only adds to the curiosity and gives supporters one more debate to chew on while they wait for the real basketball stakes to return. Spurs Backcourt Debate Just Got Even Tougher To Ignore

The Spurs backcourt picture is only getting more complicated after NBA 2K rated Dylan Harper ahead of DeAaron Fox, a nod to the way the young guard has surged while the veterans stock has cooled. Harper, just 20, put together a breakout postseason and even drew attention for his play on the biggest stage, while Foxs finish to last season was a step back after he had started so strongly.

For San Antonio, the ranking is less about a video game number than the larger question it reflects: how the Spurs balance Harpers rising influence with Foxs proven track record. Fox still has a clear path to rebound next season, and if he does, the Spurs could have two guards capable of pushing the team forward at the same time. The debate is suddenly harder to ignore because both players matter to what comes next. [Read more 🡒]

Anthony Edwards Just Added Fuel To Spurs Fans Halloween Night

Anthony Edwards is already leaning into the next stretch of Minnesotas schedule, and Spurs fans have plenty to file away from it. The Timberwolves guard talked with the kind of confidence that comes with a star expecting his group to keep moving forward, even as Minnesota works through a rebuilding phase and gets used to new faces around him, including LaMelo Ball.

For San Antonio, the interesting part is the matchup itself, since the Spurs are one of the teams Edwards singled out as a test Minnesota expects to pass. The Timberwolves are still sorting out chemistry and roles with their reshaped roster, so the meeting has the feel of a measuring-stick game for both sides, even if Edwards made it clear where he thinks the balance stands right now.
