Victor Wembanyama has quickly made a name for himself as a defensive powerhouse, and it's only a matter of time before his trophy case reflects his on-court prowess.
Although he currently has just one first-team All-Defensive honor, the buzz is that he's on a trajectory to become one of the all-time greats in defense.
While his blocks per game have dipped from last season, that's mainly because he's turned the paint into a no-fly zone. Fans and analysts alike are calling for new metrics to capture the intimidation he brings to the court every night.
Wembanyama: Dominating Both Ends
Wembanyama is arguably the most gifted defensive player we've seen. His impact on defense surpasses even legends like Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard, and his offensive game is not far behind.
His combination of defensive dominance and All-NBA-level scoring has earned him the "Alien" nickname.
“There’s never been a player like him in the history of the game with such an impact on both ends,” said Rick Carlisle. “He’s been great from the start, but he’s clearly improving. His work ethic is evident.”
Carlisle, who has coached defensive icons like Ben Wallace and played with legends such as Larry Bird and Bill Walton, knows a thing or two about defensive excellence. While he might not outright say Wembanyama surpasses Wallace defensively, Wembanyama's overall skill set is undeniable. Wallace never averaged ten points per game, while Wembanyama is nearing 25 points a night this season.
