The 2026-27 NBA MVP race, at least on NBCSports.com’s picks, starts with a simple answer: Victor Wembanyama.
That’s the name repeated across the board, and the odds reflect the same view. DraftKings lists Wembanyama as the favorite at +210, ahead of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at +350, Nikola Jokic at +500, Luka Doncic at +550 and Giannis Antetokounmpo at +1200.
The appeal of Wembanyama is easy to see. At 22, he is still climbing, and several of NBC Sports’ voters see both his offensive growth and his massive defensive value pushing him past the field.
Kurt Helin said he spent a lot of time looking for a reason to choose someone else, but came up empty outside of health. He pointed to Gilgeous-Alexander’s back-to-back MVPs, Jokic’s recent triple-double production and Doncic’s improved supporting cast, but still landed on Wembanyama because of his all-around impact.
“Wemby’s healthy, he’s going to be very tough to beat.”
Raphielle Johnson also went with Wembanyama, calling his first postseason a sign that elite players do not have to stumble for years before reaching the top. Johnson noted that the 7-foot-5 phenom led the Spurs to the NBA Finals for the first time in over a decade, and said the loss there should only sharpen his edge. In his view, this is less about a player being due and more about Wembanyama being ready to push his individual dominance even further.
Jay Croucher’s reasoning landed in the same place. He called Wembanyama the favorite for a reason, citing last season’s MVP-level performance, his age, and what he described as a likely 60-plus-win team. Croucher also said there is still plenty of room for Wembanyama to grow offensively, and added that the Spurs star showed at the end of last season he would have no problem campaigning for himself.
Drew Dinsick took the strongest line of all, saying Wembanyama is the rightful favorite and likely the first of several MVPs. He argued that the league is entering an era where Wembanyama’s presence is widely viewed as the most impactful in basketball, and pointed to San Antonio’s realistic top-two seed hopes in the West. Dinsick also said Wembanyama’s playoff step forward and durability helped remove some of the uncertainty around award eligibility, while he flagged concerns for the rest of the top contenders.
Noah Rubin agreed that the conversation comes down mostly to Wembanyama and Gilgeous-Alexander. He said he does not expect the Nuggets, Lakers or Heat to have enough team success to lift their stars over those two, and he also mentioned voter fatigue after Gilgeous-Alexander’s last two MVPs. Rubin praised Wembanyama as the league’s best defender at 22 and said his offensive growth last season was significant, especially his emphasis on scoring closer to the basket while still remaining dangerous from deep.
The bigger picture, though, is the same from every angle: if Wembanyama stays healthy, the field will have a hard time catching him.

Spurs Rotation Shift Could Cost Julian Champagnie A Bigger Role
The Spurs frontcourt picture got a little clearer this summer with the addition of Tobias Harris, and that has naturally started to reshape the rotation around him. Harris is expected to handle the starting power forward spot once healthy, which gives San Antonio a veteran presence at a position it had to address, while also putting Julian Champagnie in a spot where his role could shift depending on how the roster settles in around the new arrival.
Champagnie is still positioned to open the season in the starting five because Harris is dealing with an injury, but the long view is less certain. His place in the lineup may not last once Harris is available, and for now the more interesting part is how he handles the change after showing an acceptance of whatever role the Spurs ask of him as they sort out the minutes. Rockets Suddenly Linked To A De'Aaron Fox Move That Changes Everything
The Spurs have spent this stretch leaning into their young core, with guards Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle drawing a lot of attention as the organization keeps shaping its backcourt around Victor Wembanyama. Harper in particular has flashed enough to fuel the kind of optimism that usually comes with a premium draft pick, and the teams long-term picture appears to be getting clearer by the week as San Antonio continues to prioritize development over short-term fixes.
Thats where the DeAaron Fox conversation starts to get interesting, because the Spurs have more to sort through than just playing time at guard. If Harper is going to be part of the front line moving forward, Fox becomes the name that could alter the rotation and the roster balance in a hurry, with one scenario even sending him to Houston. For a team still defining its next version, the decision could say plenty about how quickly San Antonio wants to accelerate the timeline around Wembanyama and the young guards beside him. Spurs Fans Are Watching Dylan Harpers Messy Off-Court Story Closely
Dylan Harpers arrival in San Antonio had already put him under a brighter spotlight than most young guards get this early, and now some of that attention is spilling beyond the court. Harper has been tied on social media to allegations involving his girlfriend, JoJo Lacey, who was previously signed and waived by the Washington Mystics, turning what should have been a routine stretch of offseason chatter into a topic Spurs fans are monitoring closely.
So far, the situation has lived almost entirely in the online rumor mill. Anonymous posts have raised questions about Laceys conduct, but neither Harper nor Lacey has confirmed anything, and there has been no official statement from the Spurs or any police report to anchor the discussion. Until there is something more concrete, it remains the kind of off-court noise that can linger around a player without ever fully becoming a story, even as the lack of clarity keeps it from going away.
