In a commanding 132-104 victory over the Sacramento Kings, the San Antonio Spurs notched their 51st win of the season, marking their first 50-win campaign in nearly a decade. This achievement, according to rising star Victor Wembanyama, is the result of meticulous preparation that extends beyond just this year.
Reflecting on the journey, Wembanyama shared, “I hope we can maintain this level of focus in future off-seasons. Our mental and physical preparation, and the extensive film study we did, set the foundation for our readiness this season.”
Coming off a challenging 34-48 record last year, which followed a tough 22-60 season during Wembanyama's rookie year, the Spurs have exceeded expectations this 2025-2026 season. Yet for Wembanyama, a player of generational talent, this is just meeting the baseline.
“My goal was always to secure a playoff spot decisively, not just aim for the play-in,” Wembanyama stated after a win against the Los Angeles Clippers. At just 22, his maturity and vision for the game are evident, traits he's displayed since entering the NBA at 19.
“It’s challenging to evaluate a season in its entirety,” he noted. “We’ve had our rough patches and our high points, like our strong February.”
The Spurs recently enjoyed a stretch where they won 11 of 12 games, including key victories over the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, they faced setbacks with consecutive losses to the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers, followed by defeats against the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies, both of whom are battling for playoff spots.
Despite these hiccups, February was a flawless month for the Spurs, and they only dropped one game during a tough home stand against top-tier teams, a loss that came without Wembanyama against the Denver Nuggets.
The last time the Spurs reached the 50-win milestone was in the 2016-17 season, when they amassed 61 victories and advanced to the Western Conference Finals. That impressive run ended in a series against the Golden State Warriors after Kawhi Leonard's injury setback.
Now standing at 51-18, the Spurs are poised for a strong finish to the season. Wembanyama emphasized the importance of taking it one step at a time: “The next 14 games could be satisfying or not, but we have to stay focused.”
With 13 regular-season games left, the Spurs, led by Wembanyama, are gearing up for what looks to be an extended journey into the postseason.
