A Steph Curry trade to San Antonio remains a long shot, but the idea has enough juice to keep popping up - especially with the Warriors’ offseason going sideways.
For the Spurs to even get in the conversation, a couple of things would have to break first. Curry would need to pass on an extension this offseason, which would push him toward free agency next summer. Then he’d have to actually ask out, either before this season starts or sometime during it.
That’s a lot to ask, but the logic behind the speculation is easy to follow. If Curry ever does become available, the Spurs look like one of the few teams that could put together a real offer.
A proposed mock deal via @sportingnews would send Stephen Curry to San Antonio and bring De’Aaron Fox, Luke Kornet, and four first-round picks back to Golden State. The picks listed in the proposal are the 2027 first-rounder via Atlanta, the 2028 first-rounder via San Antonio, the 2030 first-rounder via San Antonio, and the 2031 first-rounder via San Antonio.
That is a massive haul, and it would sting for the Spurs to part with that kind of draft capital. But for a player like Curry, the price tag starts to make sense.
At 38, he still carries the kind of value that can warp a roster, and the market for him would be limited. He’s not ending up with a team like the New Orleans Pelicans or Sacramento Kings.
The real suitors would be the teams chasing a title.
San Antonio would also be able to avoid giving up Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper in this kind of scenario, which only adds to the appeal from the Spurs’ side. A package built around Fox, a starting-caliber center in Kornet, and those picks is the sort of offer that looks reasonable for a superstar of Curry’s stature.
Still, the most likely outcome remains the simplest one: Curry stays put. Even after a rough offseason for Golden State, it’s difficult to picture him turning down a lucrative extension and walking away from the only NBA home he’s known. The Warriors may not project as a serious threat next season, but Curry has spent his career in Golden State, and loyalty could still carry the day.
If he ever did decide he wanted out, though, San Antonio would be sitting in a pretty ideal spot. Swapping Fox for Curry would give the Spurs an offense that would be terrifying to deal with, and moving Kornet and Fox would help match Curry’s salary in the deal.
For now, it’s just a hypothetical. But if Curry ever hits the trade block, the Spurs would almost certainly be ready to jump.
