Spurs Sign Former Lakers Guard to Boost Wembanyamas Rising Impact

The Spurs may have found an under-the-radar backcourt boost for Victor Wembanyama in seasoned G-League sharpshooter Kyle Mangas.

The San Antonio Spurs are continuing to play the long game - and their latest move might just be another smart step in building around Victor Wembanyama.

On Friday, the Spurs signed guard Kyle Mangas to a two-way contract, giving the 6-foot-4 sharpshooter a shot at the NBA stage after a winding journey through international and G-League basketball. Mangas has been lighting it up for the Austin Spurs this season, averaging 18.5 points per game on an efficient 50% shooting from the field and a blistering 41% from beyond the arc. He’s also chipped in 5.0 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game - numbers that suggest he's more than just a scorer.

While Mangas has been a pro for nearly five years, he’s still waiting on his first official NBA minutes. His path has been anything but conventional.

After starring at Indiana Wesleyan, he started his pro career overseas with USK Praha in the Czech Republic, then moved on to Siauliai in Lithuania. He returned stateside in 2023 and joined the G-League ranks, suiting up for the Indiana Pacers’ affiliate, the Noblesville Boom (formerly the Mad Ants).

In 2024, Mangas got a look from the Los Angeles Lakers during Summer League, but didn’t crack the opening night roster. He bounced back with a stint in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) with the Vancouver Bandits before landing in Austin for the 2025-26 season - and that’s where he’s really made his mark.

Through 43 G-League games, Mangas has proven he can shoot at a high level, knocking down 40.7% of his threes across his career. That kind of efficiency from deep is exactly the kind of skill set that can complement a generational talent like Wembanyama. The Spurs have been methodical in how they’re building this roster, and adding a player like Mangas - someone who can stretch the floor, make smart reads, and contribute on both ends - fits that blueprint.

This isn’t a headline-grabbing move, but it’s the kind of under-the-radar signing that can quietly pay off. Mangas brings maturity, experience, and a proven scoring touch. And with a two-way deal, the Spurs get a chance to evaluate him up close without a big financial commitment.

For a team focused on development and long-term growth, this is a low-risk, potentially high-reward play. Mangas has put in the work, and now he’s got an opportunity. The Spurs, meanwhile, continue to show they’re not just building around Wembanyama - they’re building smart.
