The Jaylen Brown buzz around San Antonio is real enough to keep the rumor mill humming, but so far it hasn’t crossed into actual action.
The Spurs have been floated as a possible landing spot for the Boston star, especially with Brown now available after not being dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks. But despite all the speculation, San Antonio has not made an inquiry about his availability, and it hasn’t put an offer on the table.
That matters, because Brown is the biggest name attached to the Spurs this offseason. He’s been mentioned as a fit for a team that could use his talent, and San Antonio has plenty of pieces to work with if it ever decides to jump into a major deal. Still, interest and involvement are two very different things, and right now the Spurs are on the outside of this one.
Other teams have already been linked to Brown. According to HoopsHypes’ Michael Scotto, he has drawn trade interest from the Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Clippers. The Spurs were not on that list.
That doesn’t mean San Antonio hasn’t been busy in the rumor cycle. The team has already been tied to Aaron Gordon and Kawhi Leonard, and there’s been chatter about moving on from De’Aaron Fox. In free agency, the Spurs have also been connected to John Collins, Rui Hachimura, and Dean Wade.
There’s also a hypothetical path that would get Brown to San Antonio in a hurry. The Spurs could send Fox, along with Carter Bryant and draft picks, to Boston. That kind of package would give them a starting five of Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Brown, with Keldon Johnson, Luke Kornet, and Julian Champagnie coming off the bench.
For now, though, the sense is that San Antonio wants to stay the course.
This summer, a huge trade doesn’t sound likely. But if the February trade deadline comes around and Harper has moved ahead of Fox while Brown still wants out, then talks could finally pick up - unless Boston has already taken a deal from one of the other teams already in the mix.
