If the San Antonio Spurs are ever going to swing big on a point guard, Stephen Curry would be about as loud a statement as they could make.
That’s the idea Stephen Jackson put out there, anyway, when he sketched a mock trade that would send Curry to San Antonio. Jackson, who spent parts of four seasons with the Spurs and won a ring there in 2003, argued that the franchise has the pieces to make it happen if Golden State ever opens the door.
“You got De'Aaron Fox," Jackson said on his podcast. "I ain't even talking about Harper or Castle.
They got two big draft picks this year. The big from Connecticut, so they did well in the draft.
So they got the pieces to move for Steph with De'Aaron Fox. I think that would be great."
Jackson’s version of the deal would have the Spurs sending Fox, one of their first-round picks, and additional draft assets to the Warriors in exchange for Curry. In his view, that kind of move would let San Antonio keep Dylan Harper out of the bench crowd, preserve the rest of the rotation, and avoid getting boxed in financially.
The numbers are what make the conversation interesting. Fox is under contract for the next four seasons, and he’s owed $222 million.
San Antonio also has Stephon Castle set up for extension eligibility in 2027, while Harper would be eligible in the summer after that. Keeping that young core together gets expensive fast, which is why the veteran point guard could become the odd man out.
Curry, meanwhile, is still performing like a star. Last season at 37, he averaged 26.6 points and shot 39.3 percent from 3-point range. He remains the league’s most dangerous shooter and a brutally efficient scorer.
He has long looked like someone who wants to finish his career with the Warriors, but with their title window described as firmly shut, a change of scenery could eventually come into play. Curry is a free agent next summer, though he’s also eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million extension. Even if that deal got done before any trade, his salary would be off the books by the time Harper is ready for his next contract.
