NBC is wasting no time making a statement with its return to NBA coverage. The league’s Oct. 20 season opener on NBC and Peacock is built like a showcase, a three-game slate packed with star power, title banners and two heavyweight matchups that feel loaded from the jump.
The night starts in Detroit, where Jayson Tatum and Cade Cunningham headline a Boston Celtics-Detroit Pistons matinee at 3 p.m. ET.
It’s also a meeting of the East’s top two seeds from last season, with both teams expected to sit near the top again. Boston, coached by Joe Mazzulla, will lean into the 3-point barrage that defines its style, while Detroit will try to win the paint behind All-Star center Jalen Duren and Cunningham’s slashing game.
The second game belongs to Madison Square Garden, where the defending champion New York Knicks will raise their banner for the first time in 53 years and receive their rings from Adam Silver. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and the rest of the Knicks will get the celebration treatment at 7 p.m.
ET, with the pregame ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET on the NBA Showtime crew featuring Carmelo Anthony, Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter.
Then comes the spoiler act. LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and a loaded Philadelphia 76ers group will try to walk into the building and disrupt the party.
Philadelphia’s offseason shakeup included the stunning addition of Jaylen Brown from Boston, a move that brought in a player who finished sixth in MVP voting last season and averaged 28.7 points per game. That kind of firepower pushed the 76ers into title-contender territory, and it’s also what drew LeBron James to the spot he felt gave him the best shot at helping a team win a ring.
Nick Nurse now has plenty of talent to sort through, with several players who want the ball and can score.
The night closes with what could easily pass for a late-round playoff game: Oklahoma City against San Antonio at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The Thunder and Spurs met in a seven-game Western Conference Finals last May, and both enter the new season among the favorites to win it all. Victor Wembanyama and two-time reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the headliners, but this one also carries the momentum of San Antonio’s young core, including Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, growing up during that playoff run.
Oklahoma City will have Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell back healthy after injuries sidelined both in that series, giving the Thunder a full-strength look as they try to take back the crown.
The opening-night lineup is loaded with familiar hardware, too. The slate includes 10 All-Stars and eight All-NBA players from last season, along with the reigning MVP, Finals MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Brunson, Victor Wembanyama and Joe Mazzulla.
For NBC, it’s the first time any network has aired three NBA Tip-Off games on the same day, and all of it will be available on NBC and Peacock. The network’s full regular-season NBA schedule is set to be released Thursday, Aug. 13.

Spurs fans already have the first pieces of the 2026-27 calendar to work with, and that is enough to start sketching out what next fall could look like. The league has released part of San Antonios schedule, including preseason and regular-season dates along with broadcast information, so there is at least some clarity now around when the next chapter begins and how it will be shown.
There is also the added wrinkle of the Emirates NBA Cup 2026, where the Spurs landed in Group C with the Lakers, Trail Blazers, Warriors and Kings.
