San Antonio’s training camp is still a few weeks out, but a fresh De’Aaron Fox trade idea has already put the Spurs back in the spotlight.
Bleacher Report floated a blockbuster that would send Fox to the New Orleans Pelicans, with the Spurs getting Trey Murphy III and a reunion with former Spur Dejounte Murray. The proposal also includes Luke Kornet, two first-round picks, two pick swaps, and three seconds heading to New Orleans.
Fox has spent all summer in trade chatter, though the Spurs have not seemed eager to move him. Still, the thinking behind the idea is easy to follow: if Fox opens next season strong, his trade value could climb again, and the Pelicans might become a realistic landing spot. They have multiple useful players on a struggling roster, and Murray is one of them.
At first blush, the cost looks steep for San Antonio. Even so, Murphy III gives the Spurs a real reason to listen.
He’s an efficient scoring wing who can hit threes in volume, finish above the rim, and hold his own on defense. If the Spurs could move off Fox’s contract and bring in Murphy III, that alone would make some sense.
The Murray piece adds another layer. He hasn’t looked like the same player since leaving San Antonio, especially after two major injuries, but he could still help as a backup point guard, even if that would be an expensive role. The deal would also clear a path for Dylan Harper to start.
There’s another major factor here: contract length. Murray has two seasons left on his deal, while Fox has five. From a long-term cost standpoint, that matters.
Even so, the biggest problem for San Antonio in this version of the deal is Kornet. The Spurs might be far more willing to consider the framework if Fox, Harrison Barnes, and Jordan McLaughlin were the outgoing pieces instead of Kornet. As written, the Spurs would likely pass, even if the Pelicans could be open to it.
If San Antonio could keep Kornet and swap in Barnes and McLaughlin, the calculus changes. Then the Spurs could move on from Fox’s massive contract, reunite with Murray, and add Murphy III in the process.
