The San Antonio Spurs are rolling into the post-All-Star break with some serious momentum. Sitting at 38-16, they're just a stone's throw from the top spot in the Western Conference, trailing Oklahoma City by three games. The Spurs are riding a league-best six-game winning streak, and they’re hungry to extend it as they push for the regular-season crown.
Stephon Castle, the Spurs' dynamic guard, summed it up well: "We’re at a pivotal point in the season where every game counts. We’ve positioned ourselves nicely before the break, and now it’s about executing what we’ve been building on."
Next up, they face the Phoenix Suns in Austin as part of the I-35 Series, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Spurs have been unstoppable in February, boasting a perfect 6-0 record, including five double-digit wins. They’re eager to settle the score with Phoenix after dropping two earlier contests this season.
The previous matchups against the Suns were missing key players. De’Aaron Fox was absent from the first game, while Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle were sidelined in the second. Now, with a healthy roster, the Spurs are primed for a strong finish.
Last year’s post-All-Star game against the Suns marked a tough moment for the Spurs with Wembanyama’s health scare. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery, and this season, San Antonio has already surpassed last year’s win tally. The Rodeo Road Trip, which once seemed daunting, has turned into a boost, with the Austin games feeling increasingly like home turf.
Castle noted the electric atmosphere: “Last time here, it felt like a home game. The energy is incredible, and it’s a refreshing change of pace.”
To bolster their depth, the Spurs have brought in veteran center Mason Plumlee on a 10-day contract. Known for his high basketball IQ, Plumlee has been warmly welcomed to the squad. “He’s a great guy, brings good energy, and we’re excited to have him,” said Vassell.
While Plumlee won’t see action in the Austin games as he gets into game shape, the Spurs are keeping an eye on his progress for future contributions.
Favored by 8 points, the Spurs are determined to keep their February streak alive against Phoenix. With a healthy roster and newfound energy, San Antonio is ready to make a statement as the season heats up.
