The Knicks are adding a versatile piece to their frontcourt, with Jeremy Sochan set to join the roster once he clears waivers. The former San Antonio Spurs forward, recently waived by the team, has chosen New York as his next stop after reportedly drawing interest from 10 teams around the league.
Sochan, the ninth overall pick in his draft class, brings a unique blend of size, energy, and defensive upside. At 6-foot-8, he's known for his ability to guard multiple positions and switch seamlessly on the perimeter-an asset that could give the Knicks some added flexibility down the stretch. While his offensive game is still developing, he’s shown flashes of playmaking and scoring ability, averaging 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists over 212 career games in San Antonio.
But this season has been a different story. Sochan fell completely out of the Spurs’ rotation, not logging a single minute in 19 of his last 31 games.
When he did play, it was sparingly-just 7.5 minutes per game during that stretch. San Antonio reportedly explored trade options ahead of the deadline, but with no deal materializing, the team ultimately opted to waive the 22-year-old.
For the Knicks, this is a low-risk, high-upside move. Sochan’s defensive versatility fits well with Tom Thibodeau’s system, and in a playoff race where every possession counts, having a switchable wing who can disrupt opposing offenses might prove valuable. He won't be expected to carry a heavy load right away, but if he can carve out a role, his energy and length could make him a sneaky contributor off the bench.
It’s also a fresh start for Sochan-a chance to reset his trajectory after a frustrating year in San Antonio. Sometimes, all a young player needs is a new environment and a coaching staff willing to tap into their potential. The Knicks are betting that Sochan still has plenty of untapped upside, and now it's up to him to prove them right.
