Jeremy Sochan, the former San Antonio Spurs power forward, is gearing up for his debut with the New York Knicks, and he's not holding back about his time in San Antonio. At 22, Sochan has opened up about some differences he had with Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson, particularly regarding his role on the team.
Sochan expressed a desire for a bigger role, which was challenging given the Spurs' deep roster. "No real opportunity in my opinion.
It is what it is. It's a deep team.
Sochan on what happened in San Antonio: "No real opportunity in my opinion. It is what it is. It's a deep team. Maybe I didn't see eye-to-eye with coach. I'm just blessed to be somewhere to grow."

Maybe I didn't see eye-to-eye with coach. I'm just blessed to be somewhere to grow," Sochan shared, reflecting a sense of relief and optimism about his new opportunity.
Even Coach Johnson acknowledged Sochan's wish for more playing time, noting, "We were all very aware of his desire to be in the rotation and given more of an opportunity, especially recently. We wanted to do right by him and make sure he had that opportunity before the year was over."
The Spurs' rotation faced tightening due to roster changes and developmental priorities, which saw Sochan's minutes dwindle to just 12.8 per game during the 2025-26 season. This move also signaled the end of San Antonio’s 2022 first-round draft class, with Sochan being the last to depart following Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham.
Despite averaging 4.1 points and 2.6 assists in limited minutes, Sochan's defensive versatility and effort remained unquestioned. The Spurs needed more in terms of floor spacing and offensive output, areas where Sochan didn't have enough time to showcase his capabilities, especially alongside standout Victor Wembanyama.
Now with the Knicks, Sochan is hopeful for a fresh start and the chance to truly demonstrate his potential on the court.
