According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, if Giannis were ever to formally request a trade, New York would be his top choice. That’s a big “if,” of course-but it’s enough to get Madison Square Garden buzzing.
Haynes noted that over the summer, the Knicks were clearly Antetokounmpo’s preferred destination. But as the season has unfolded, the dynamics have shifted.

“Ultimately, I think [Giannis] would like to have some sun and be in a big market,” Haynes said. “He wants to compete for a championship.”
That last part is key. Wherever he goes-if he goes-it’s going to be about winning.
The Spurs, in particular, have drawn attention lately. After punching their ticket to the NBA Cup Final by taking down the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio is showing signs of being ahead of schedule.
That success might actually cool their pursuit of Giannis, at least in the short term. According to insider Evan Sidery, the Spurs could opt to stay the course with their current group, rather than cashing in their assets for a blockbuster deal by the February deadline.
That measured approach includes keeping their prized young players off the table. Reports indicate San Antonio would be unwilling to include Dylan Harper or Stephon Castle in any potential deal for Antetokounmpo. And that tells you something about how the Spurs view their long-term plan-they’re building something they believe in, and they’re not ready to blow it up just yet.
