Dylan Harper has made it a lot tougher to sell the De’Aaron Fox trade idea in San Antonio.
In a recent conversation with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Harper said the thought of sharing the floor with multiple ball-handlers never bothered him. More than that, he made clear that Fox has been a major help since he arrived.
“Fox basically took me under his wing my whole first year and helped me and allowed me to grow in this space,” Harper told Robinson. He added, “Me and him never had a problem. I've never seen a problem playing with two to three ball handlers on the floor.”
Harper didn’t stop there. He also called Fox “a big factor” and “a big piece in us winning now and in the future.”
That’s the part that really lands. Harper is the player whose role was supposed to be most threatened by a crowded backcourt.
He’s the one who would have every reason to worry about touches, reps, and development in a three-guard setup. Instead, he’s praising Fox and even calling him his “uncle,” while saying Fox taught him how to “take control of the game.”
For a 2025 No. 2 pick to say the fit works, that carries real weight.
The timing makes the argument even more complicated. San Antonio went 62-20 and made the Finals before falling to the Knicks, which answered a lot of the concerns that had been floating around last October about having too many ball-dominant guards and not enough touches to go around.
Still, the roster questions haven’t disappeared. Fox’s four-year, $229 million extension begins this season.
Victor Wembanyama’s usage is still going to be high. Stephon Castle remains part of the picture.
There’s still a world where a decision about Fox eventually has to be made if the three-guard lineup doesn’t work the way the Spurs want it to.
But that’s a future conversation, not one the Spurs need to force today. The organization already showed what it thinks of Fox when it paid him, and this team just made the Finals with this group. That buys them the right to let it breathe.
Harper’s message was simple: the fit works for him. And if the player most affected by it says there’s no problem, that’s the voice San Antonio should be hearing.
