De'Aaron Fox has been making waves since his trade to the San Antonio Spurs, leaving behind a significant legacy with the Sacramento Kings. After spending over seven years with the Kings, Fox's focus is clear: winning a championship with his new team.
Reflecting on his time in Sacramento, Fox was a key player during the Kings' most successful stretch in two decades. The 2022-2023 season saw them clinch a division title with 48 wins, followed by another strong season with 46 victories. These achievements marked the franchise's best since their 50-win season back in 2004-05.
Returning to Sacramento, Fox downplayed any emotional ties, emphasizing his professional mindset. “It's sweet coming back here because I get to see people that I've seen for so many years. But, other than that, when we get between those lines, it's a normal game,” he said, keeping his focus on the court.
The Kings have undergone significant changes since Fox's departure in February 2024. Domantas Sabonis is sidelined for the season due to meniscus surgery, and Russell Westbrook has become a pivotal player in their lineup. Despite these changes, Fox remains unfazed, stating, “I don't watch them any more than I watch any other team.”
Currently, the Kings are struggling with an 18-52 record, the worst in the Western Conference. It's a position the Spurs can relate to, having finished 22-60 two seasons ago with rookie Victor Wembanyama. Fox, who joined the Spurs shortly after that challenging season, understands the dynamics of rebuilding, noting, “In the rebuilding stage, the young guys (Kings), I think, are playing well.”
Fox's initial stint with the Spurs was brief, playing just over a month and teaming up with Wembanyama for five games before injuries sidelined both players. Despite these setbacks, the Spurs improved by 12 wins over the previous year, showcasing their growth and resilience.
This season, Fox is averaging 19 points per game, second only to Wembanyama on the team, and has earned another All-Star selection. His contributions are vital as the Spurs aim to reestablish themselves as a formidable force in the league. Fox's journey from Sacramento to San Antonio is a testament to his adaptability and determination to succeed at the highest level.
