Sabonis Just Put The Kings' Long Term Direction Back In Focus

Kings' Domantas Sabonis addresses trade rumors with a surprising revelation, emphasizing recovery and future with the team.

Domantas Sabonis says the offseason trade chatter around him came as a surprise, but the Kings big man isn’t spending much energy on it.

Speaking during Kings media day with NBC Sports California’s Deuce Mason and Morgan Ragan, Sabonis said his focus was locked on recovering from the torn meniscus that limited him to a career-low 19 games last season and ended his year in February.

“I guess the injury helped, because I was just focused on the injury and just ignoring all that,” Sabonis said. “I have great agents, Scott’s been open with me. So, I mean, I know everything that’s going on.”

Still, his name kept surfacing in reports throughout last season and the offseason. The Kings were said to have discussed a deal with the Charlotte Hornets ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft in June, and more recently Sabonis was included in talks with the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics.

That part, Sabonis said, caught him off guard.

“I see all the stuff. I’m shocked that people write all this stuff and have zero clue of what’s actually going on,” Sabonis explained.

“But I get it, it’s their job. I’m happy to have a great relationship with Scott that everything’s clear.”

That relationship with general manager Scott Perry has remained central as Sacramento tries to figure out its next step after a steady slide since reaching the playoffs in the 2022-23 NBA season. Perry said in July that he expects Sabonis to be a key piece for the 2026-27 NBA season, and he said the front office has stayed in contact with the three-time All-Star.

“Obviously, he’s an excellent player,” Perry said to reporters during a July media availability. “He’s done it for a while in this league.

I’ve been in constant contact with him as well in the offseason. Just expect him to come in here healthy, first and foremost, and he’s trending in that direction.

“Obviously, he missed a lot of last year because he was not. He’s always played hard, and so I expect him to do that. Provide some veteran presence for this team and really have a tremendous rebound year and help us build some winning habits here and start heading in the right direction.”

Sabonis is entering his 11th NBA season and the third year of the four-year, $186 million contract he signed. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent before the 2028-29 NBA season.

For now, though, Sabonis says the rumor mill isn’t getting much of his attention.

Mavericks Make Another Early Camp Cut As Roster Decisions Begin

Training camp roster churn is starting to take shape around the league, and the Kings have already made one of the quieter moves by bringing in David Muoka on a similar non-guaranteed deal. Sacramento is sorting through its depth options as teams everywhere begin trimming the edges of their rosters, with front offices using these early contracts to create a little flexibility while they evaluate who can stick.

Around the Western Conference, the same pattern is playing out in different forms. The Pelicans have re-signed Hunter Dickinson to a training camp contract with Exhibit 10 language, the Spurs have added Kendall Brown on a camp deal, and the Mavericks have already moved on from Jorge Diaz Graham after his recent preseason appearance. For Sacramento, these early transactions are part of the same broader picture as the Kings continue to monitor the market and their own camp competition. [Read more 🡒]

Kings Final Two-Way Choice Says Plenty About Their Roster Priorities

The Kings have used their final two-way opening to add Leaky Black, a move that says as much about what Sacramento wanted to see in camp as it does about the player it chose. After waiving Isaiah Stevens, the team settled on Black following a preseason stretch in which the forward showed the kinds of traits front offices tend to notice when filling out the back end of a roster.

Black, who went undrafted in 2023 and previously held a two-way deal with the Wizards, drew the Kings attention with his defense, three-point shooting and rebounding. He now joins Adam Flagler and Jonathan Mogbo on Sacramentos two-way list, giving the organization a clearer picture of the depth it wants to carry into the season and the type of versatile pieces it values around the margins. Kings Just Gave Fans A New Defense First Name To Watch

The Kings gave themselves a little more flexibility in the back end of the roster by converting forward Leaky Blacks Exhibit 10 contract into a two-way deal, filling one of their open two-way slots. It is the kind of move that usually flies under the radar outside team circles, but for Sacramento it adds another developmental piece to a group that has been sorting through the edges of camp and preseason.

Black brings some NBA experience from stops with the Hornets and Wizards, and he had already made a solid impression with the Kings through G League play and preseason action. The move, announced by the team, does not require any corresponding roster cut, which keeps the picture clean for Sacramento as it continues to shape the season-opening mix. [Read more 🡒]
