The Grizzlies are working the phones on Walter Clayton Jr. as they try to trim their standard roster to 15 players by Monday’s 4:00 pm CT deadline, according to league sources cited by Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Sacramento has emerged as a possible landing spot. Stein and Fischer reported that the Kings are considering adding a guard after Ben Simmons ’ torn Achilles tendon left them exploring backcourt options.
Clayton, a second-year guard, was selected 18th overall in the 2025 draft after he led Florida to an NCAA championship earlier that year. His senior season with the Gators brought plenty of hardware, including Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament and first-team All-America recognition from several outlets.
The path to Memphis has already been a winding one. The Jazz moved up to draft Clayton, then sent him to the Grizzlies in February as part of the Jaren Jackson Jr. blockbuster.
Back then, Memphis GM Zach Kleiman made clear the team believed in him and saw him fitting into its young core. That view, at least for now, appears to have shifted.
Clayton’s first NBA season was uneven, to put it mildly. Across 69 combined games with Utah and Memphis, he averaged 7.8 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 20.4 minutes per night while shooting .384/.307/.901.
Memphis is currently carrying 17 players on standard contracts, so the club has to make two moves to get down to the required number before the deadline.
Fischer also reported that Sacramento reached out to Milwaukee about Kevin Porter Jr., another guard he had previously identified as a possible trade candidate. The Bucks are at 16 players on standard deals, meaning a Porter trade without a player coming back would leave their roster in line for the regular season.

Ben Simmons Just Became A Huge New Problem For The Kings
Ben Simmons had barely settled in with Sacramento before the Kings were forced to confront a much bigger concern. According to ESPNs Shams Charania, Simmons may have suffered a torn Achilles tendon during practice, a devastating setback for a player the Kings were counting on to fill an important role after signing him recently.
For a team already sorting through injuries elsewhere on the roster, the timing is especially rough. Sacramento was hoping Simmons could bring size, playmaking and defensive versatility to a rotation that needed more depth, but now the Kings could be staring at a season in which they never get the chance to see how that fit was supposed to work. Kings Fans Already Have One Rookie Debate They Won't Ignore
The Kings came out of the 2026 NBA Draft with Darius Acuff Jr. as their seventh overall pick, and the early plan is straightforward: develop him as a rookie point guard while he grows alongside the rest of Sacramentos young core. It is the kind of long-view move that fits a team trying to build something sustainable, even if it means patience will be part of the equation from the start.
Then Yaxel Lendeborg showed up in a preseason game for Golden State and gave the early Rookie of the Year conversation a jolt, putting up 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the 11th overall pick. For Kings fans already sizing up Acuff against the rest of this class, the comparison is hard to ignore, and it adds an extra layer to every early glimpse of Sacramentos newest guard. [Read more 🡒]
Kings Opening Night Plans Just Took A Brutal Early Hit
Ben Simmons had given the Kings at least a reason to be intrigued during training camp and the preseason, showing enough promise to make him part of the early conversation around Sacramentos rotation. Instead, the club now has to absorb a far harsher reality, with Simmons believed to have suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a team practice, a setback that is expected to wipe out his season before it even begins.
For a team still shaping its opening-night plans, the timing could hardly be worse. Sacramento had been counting on seeing how Simmons fit into the lineup and roster structure heading into the regular season, and now those plans have to be redrawn without him, leaving the Kings to find answers quickly before the opener arrives.
