The Sacramento Kings gave themselves a late chance Wednesday night, but the damage was done long before the final minutes.
Boston jumped all over Sacramento in NBA Summer League play at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, and the Kings never fully recovered from a brutal opening stretch in an 82-76 loss. Sacramento missed 18 of its first 19 shots and went nearly seven minutes without scoring, digging a hole that proved too deep even after a late push.
Hugo Gonzalez led the Celtics with a double-double, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as Boston improved to 3-1. John Tonje added 18 points, Milos Uzan scored 13, and Chris Cenac Jr. came off the bench for 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Alex Karaban carried Sacramento with 21 points and eight rebounds, knocking down 5 of 7 from 3-point range while shooting 7 of 15 overall. Emanuel Sharp added 12 points, Adam Flagler scored 11, and Jonathan Mogbo chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds for the Kings, who fell to 1-3.
Sacramento was without rookie point guard Darius Acuff Jr., the No. 7 pick in Junes NBA draft, along with second-year guard Nique Clifford and second-year center Maxime Raynaud. That left the Kings short-handed, and the offense never found much rhythm early.
Boston seized control right away, opening up a 13-2 lead after Sacramento started 1 of 19 from the floor. Mogbo finally got the Kings on the board with a putback at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter, and B.J. Edwards followed with a midrange jumper at 2:22 to end the next drought.
The Celtics carried a 39-28 lead into halftime and were still up 57-49 after three quarters. Sacramento trimmed the margin to five on a Flagler floater with 5:59 left, but Boston answered with an 11-0 run to close it out.
The Kings will finish summer league play Friday with a consolation game against the Charlotte Hornets at 3:30 p.m.
