Kings Final Roster Battle Is Heating Up In The Backcourt

The Sacramento Kings are exploring seasoned talent with upcoming veteran workouts, potentially reshaping their roster ahead of training camp.

The Kings are set to bring in a handful of veteran guards for workouts in the coming days, with the first session scheduled for Thursday and Cameron Payne leading the group.

Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported the workout plans on Twitter, and Payne is the first name on the list. The 32-year-old point guard is coming off a season in which he played 22 games for the Sixers after a productive 2024/25 run with the Knicks that featured several notable playoff moments. In Philadelphia, he averaged 7.4 points, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals in 17.0 minutes per game.

Another ball-handler the Kings are expected to evaluate is Elfrid Payton. Fischer said Sacramento is also considering the 32-year-old, whose most recent NBA action came in the 2024/25 season.

Payton split that year between the Pelicans and Hornets, putting up 3.5 points in 21.3 minutes per game while shooting 32.8% from the field. He spent last season with the Austin Spurs in the G League, where he averaged 6.3 points in 22.3 minutes across 29 games.

Victor Oladipo remains on Sacramento’s radar as well. Fischer noted that the Kings have kept their interest in the 34-year-old, who held a pro day in Las Vegas in July. Sacramento was among the teams in attendance.

The Kings waived DeMar DeRozan earlier in the offseason and currently have 13 players under contract, which leaves them with two open spots as they move toward training camp.

Kings Just Made Their Belief In Emanuel Sharp Crystal Clear

The Kings used one of their rare second-round commitments to make a clear statement about Emanuel Sharp, taking him 45th overall and moving quickly to lock him into a three-year, $6.35 million contract with two fully guaranteed seasons. For a team looking to add more two-way pop on the perimeter, the move fits the profile of a front office betting on upside rather than treating the pick as a flyer.

Sharps appeal is easy to see from Sacramentos side. He has already shown shooting touch and defensive instincts in college and summer league play, and that combination gives him a chance to grow into a useful 3-and-D guard. The real question now is how quickly he can turn that promise into reliable minutes, especially with the Kings signaling they are willing to invest in him more seriously than most clubs do in a mid-second-round pick. Jason Williams Gives Kings Fans Another Hit Of Sacramento Nostalgia

Jason Williams gave basketball shoe fans and Sacramento loyalists a fresh dose of nostalgia at the SLAM Summer Classic Vol. 8 in New York City, where he debuted two new colorways of the Nike Zoom Hyperflight. The limited-edition collaboration between SLAM and Nike leans into the look and legacy of Williams Kings years, and the first pair, the Safety Orange version, arrived on Aug. 15, 2026 before disappearing quickly.

The second unveiling, a Platinum colorway, kept the momentum going without offering much clarity on what comes next. For Kings fans, though, the appeal is obvious: Williams time in Sacramento remains one of the franchises most vivid touchpoints, and this latest sneaker release only adds to the cachet of that era while leaving at least one piece of the rollout unresolved.
