The Kings are still piecing together their roster this offseason, and one path they’re weighing points toward a familiar face.
Sacramento is reportedly looking at veteran guards to help guide No. 7 pick Darius Acuff, and that has put Russell Westbrook back on the radar. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Kings are also considering Victor Oladipo as part of that same veteran mix.
“Among tonight’s items, sources say the Kings are considering adding one of various veteran guards to help mentor No. 7 pick Darius Acuff, to where Sacramento is now considering a return for Russell Westbrook, in addition to signing Victor Oladipo,” Fischer wrote.
Westbrook spent the entire 2025-26 season with Sacramento, starting every game he played in and appearing in 64 contests. He’s now a free agent after turning down his player option for 2026-27 and is taking a look at his choices. The veteran guard finished Year 18 with averages of 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game, showing he can still give a team real production.
Oladipo, meanwhile, has been out of the NBA since his stint with the Miami Heat in the 2022-23 season. Even so, he’s trying to work his way back into the league and still brings the kind of two-way skill set teams often value from a backcourt veteran.
Sacramento is in another rebuild, leaning into young talent while also searching for stabilizers who can help set the tone. Westbrook and Oladipo fit that idea, with both bringing more than a decade of backcourt experience.
The Kings are coming off a rough 22-60 season, which left them second-to-last in the Western Conference standings. Only the Utah Jazz were below them, while the Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks sat ahead in the West.
Now the focus is on getting back to the playoff level Sacramento reached in 2023, its first postseason appearance since 2006. That’s the target. The work ahead is what will decide whether the Kings can get there again.
