Kings 0-6 Start Just Put Sabonis Tension Under A Spotlight

As the Kings struggle to find their rhythm, tensions rise between Domantas Sabonis and the promising rookie Darius Acuff Jr., potentially pushing Sabonis to seek greener pastures.

The Sacramento Kings’ 0-6 start has already put the season on edge, and now Domantas Sabonis has been pulled into the noise around where this team is headed next. After a 136-105 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Kings are staring at a mess that goes beyond the scoreboard, with questions swirling about Sabonis, the organization, and how he fits alongside Darius Acuff Jr.

Sabonis had already been a talking point earlier in the offseason, when there was plenty of speculation that he could be on the move. He pushed back on that idea at the time, pointing to his “good relationship” with the organization. But with Sacramento still winless, the conversation has shifted again, and Heavy’s Sean Deveney suggested the tension could stem from fit concerns with Acuff Jr.

Deveney wrote, “Sabonis has some hope, because teams always need size, and if he is not traded this season, he should be dealt off next summer. The Kings have no interest in keeping him there, and he is not enthused about playing with a ball-dominant guard like Acuff.”

He also said, “The team has been given over to low-efficiency chucker Darius Acuff, which is only hurting the value either player might have on the market, which was limited to being with.”

That framing makes sense on paper, especially with Sabonis and Zach LaVine both viewed as trade pieces. Sacramento’s rough start and Acuff Jr.’s style of play could be dragging down the market for both players.

Still, that version of events has been challenged. Brendan Nunes of Sactown Sports 1140 said Deveney’s report could not be “further from the truth,” and added that his sources believe Sabonis and Acuff Jr. have been in great communication.

The on-court numbers show why this remains such a tricky situation. Sabonis has been excellent through six games, averaging 16.0 points, 15.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists while shooting 70.4% from the field. He leads the league in rebounding and continues to look every bit like a star-caliber big man.

Acuff Jr., meanwhile, has taken over much of the offensive load. The 19-year-old has answered early criticism about his shot selection by scoring 30-plus points in back-to-back games. He’s averaging 26.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.3 assists while shooting 39.6% from the field.

There is obvious appeal in pairing Acuff’s upside with Sabonis’ veteran production. But the results so far have not matched the talent on paper, and with Vivek Ranadivé reportedly unhappy with the team’s recent stretch of poor performance, the situation is only getting more complicated.

For now, Sabonis may be Sacramento’s most valuable trade chip. Even with a good relationship in place, the Kings may eventually have to decide whether keeping him makes more sense than moving him.

Kings Face A Real Sabonis Question As Jazz Rumors Grow

Domantas Sabonis has become one of the more intriguing names in the early swirl of Kings-related trade chatter, and the fit being discussed says plenty about why. The Jazz have been floated as a possible destination because they are still searching for a true pick-and-roll force to organize their offense, and Sabonis brings exactly the kind of screen-setting and playmaking that can make young scorers easier to develop around. For Sacramento, it is a reminder that a player so central to the teams structure can also become the center of outside speculation.

The challenge for Utah is simple enough to understand and difficult enough to solve. Even if the Jazz like the basketball fit, the salary cap and contract realities make a deal complicated, which leaves plenty of uncertainty around whether this is a real path or just another rumor gaining traction because the name makes sense on paper. For the Kings, the bigger question is not just whether Sabonis could be moved, but what it would mean if the noise around him keeps building. [Read more 🡒]

Kings Winless Start Just Put More Pressure On One Injury Decision

The early-season pressure around Sacramento is only getting louder as the Kings head into a matchup with Dallas still searching for their first win. Injuries have already complicated the picture, with Zach LaVine listed as questionable, and that uncertainty adds another layer to a team that badly needs to steady itself before the standings start to separate.

Dallas comes in with a stronger start under Dusty May, but the bigger concern for Sacramento is how it handles the health of its own roster while trying to avoid digging a deeper hole. Kyrie Irving is also questionable for the Mavericks, so the game could come down to which side is better equipped to absorb a key absence and still find enough offense to take control. [Read more 🡒]

Kings May Be Ignoring A Rotation Answer In Jonathan Mogbo

Jonathan Mogbo arrived in Sacramento on a two-way deal after being waived by Toronto in the offseason, and he quickly made enough of an impression in Summer League and preseason to get the Kings front office paying attention. Since then, his role has been much less steady, with his regular-season minutes swinging from night to night as the team sorts through its frontcourt options.

Still, the appeal is easy to see for a Kings team looking for useful depth: Mogbo has already shown enough to suggest he can help, yet he has not been consistently folded into the rotation. With him averaging 17.3 minutes over six games, Sacramento appears to have a player in-house who has earned a longer look, even if the staff has not fully committed to it yet. [Read more 🡒]
