Keegan Murray Eyes Growth Amid Kings' Injury Challenges

Keegan Murray sees the last stretch of a challenging Kings season as a pivotal chance to elevate his game amidst a wave of injuries.

The Sacramento Kings are navigating a challenging season with a slew of injuries, but this adversity is opening doors for their young talents. Keegan Murray, fresh off an ankle injury, is ready to seize this opportunity as he makes his return.

Following Wednesday's practice, the Kings laid out their current injury landscape. Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine, both former All-Stars, are sidelined for the season due to surgeries-Sabonis for a knee issue and LaVine for a finger tendon tear. Rookie Dylan Cardwell also finds himself on the injured list, with an ankle sprain that will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

However, there’s a silver lining. Murray is set to play in Thursday’s home game against the Orlando Magic. De’Andre Hunter, the team’s recent trade deadline acquisition, fully participated in practice, with updates on his status expected soon.

With the team shifting its focus to developing young talent, Murray becomes a pivotal piece for the remaining 26 games of the season. The fourth overall pick in 2022 has been limited to just 19 games this season, battling various injuries. His recent ankle sprain kept him out for 20 games, but he’s optimistic about his return.

“This is the first ankle sprain I’ve ever had,” Murray shared. “It took some time to recover, but I feel ready now. The All-Star break was a turning point for me.”

Murray had set his sights on the Most Improved Player award this season, but injuries have been a roadblock. In his limited play, he’s averaged 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, with shooting percentages dipping to career lows.

“It’s been a stagnant year, with all the interruptions,” he admitted. “But I’m focused on finding my rhythm and progressing as we move into the summer.”

With eight of the final 26 games against non-playoff teams, Murray sees this stretch as a chance to elevate his game. Partnering with DeMar DeRozan, he aims to step up as a primary option.

“This is a big opportunity for me to grow,” Murray said. “Playing alongside DeMar and [De’Aaron] Fox, I haven’t had many chances to take big shots. Now, I’m looking to make those moments count.”

Coach Doug Christie echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of these opportunities for Murray’s development.

“This is a crucial moment for Keegan,” Christie noted. “These experiences are what he’ll carry into the offseason. He has the green light to be aggressive and expand his game.”

While the Kings may not be in the playoff hunt, a strong finish from Murray could provide a significant boost heading into a pivotal offseason. All involved are keenly aware of the stakes and are eager to make the most of what remains of the season.

As for the Kings' schedule, they face the Orlando Magic on Thursday, February 19th, at the Golden 1 Center. Last season, Orlando had the upper hand, sweeping the series. Fans can catch the action on Sactown Sports 1140 AM, with coverage starting at 5:30 PM PT before the 7:00 PM PT tip-off.
