The Charlotte Hornets took to the court Wednesday night against the Sacramento Kings, aiming to build on their momentum after a victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday. However, they faced a late lineup challenge with backup center Ryan Kalkbrenner sidelined due to illness, despite being listed as probable earlier.
This development, combined with Grant Williams' ongoing knee injury, left the Hornets' frontcourt options thin. Head coach Charles Lee had to make adjustments, turning to Xavier Tillman Sr., a seasoned six-year veteran, to step up and support Moussa Diabate.
Tillman Sr., who was acquired from the Boston Celtics at the trade deadline, had only clocked 18 minutes with the Hornets before this game. But against the Kings, he saw significant action, playing 14 minutes and demonstrating his value as a reliable rotation player. His contribution included two points, six rebounds, and three assists, all without committing a turnover.
While these stats might not jump off the page, Tillman Sr. showed he could be a dependable backup, potentially earning more minutes moving forward. His journey from limited playtime on a stacked Celtics roster to proving his worth in Charlotte is notable. Just a couple of seasons ago with the Memphis Grizzlies, Tillman Sr. had his best year, averaging seven points, five rebounds, 1.6 assists, a steal, and half a block per game, highlighting his capabilities on both ends of the court.
Looking ahead, the Hornets face the Spurs on Saturday. If Kalkbrenner returns, Tillman Sr. might see his minutes reduced. However, his recent performance has certainly made a case for more opportunities in the Hornets' rotation.
