Grizzlies Hint at Ja Morant Trade Ahead of Looming Deadline

As the trade deadline looms, the Grizzlies face a tough decision on Ja Morant, balancing diminished value with lingering outside interest.

As the NBA trade deadline barrels toward us, the rumor mill is spinning at full speed-and one name that continues to linger just beneath the surface is Ja Morant.

While much of the league's attention has shifted toward bigger headline grabbers like Giannis Antetokounmpo and James Harden, Morant remains a fascinating subplot. Not long ago, the Grizzlies’ electric guard seemed like the next marquee name to be moved, especially after Trae Young was shipped off to the Wizards. At that point, it felt like Morant’s departure from Memphis was a matter of when, not if.

But things have cooled. A combination of past off-court issues and a noticeable dip in on-court production has taken some of the shine off Morant’s trade value. That’s not to say teams aren’t still interested-one Western Conference squad, in particular, is reportedly keeping a very close eye on the situation.

According to team sources, the Sacramento Kings are one of the few franchises still seriously considering a move for Morant ahead of Thursday’s deadline. In fact, they may be the only team still actively weighing the possibility. While the odds of a deal coming together remain low-described as “low single digits” by insiders before the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade-the door hasn’t been shut completely.

Now, here’s where it gets complicated. Even if the Kings make a move, Morant reportedly isn’t keen on the idea of signing an extension with Sacramento. That hesitation is a major sticking point and one of the key reasons why talks haven’t gained real traction.

From Memphis’ perspective, it’s a tough position. Morant’s trade value has taken a hit, and the Grizzlies know they’re unlikely to get a return that reflects his talent ceiling.

A couple of years ago, teams would’ve emptied the war chest for a shot at Morant. His explosive athleticism, flair for the dramatic, and star power made him one of the league’s most coveted young players.

But recent injuries and off-court missteps have changed the narrative.

Still, the Grizzlies don’t appear to be in panic mode. League sources suggest Memphis is comfortable holding onto Morant past the deadline. Whether that’s a negotiating tactic or a genuine stance remains to be seen, but it’s clear they’re not desperate to make a move just to make one.

The big question: Would Memphis entertain a Trae Young-type package for Morant? That’s the benchmark floating around the league. But unless the Kings-or anyone else-are willing to take a gamble on both the player and the person, it’s hard to see a deal getting done in the next few days.

With the deadline looming, Morant’s name isn’t dominating headlines the way it once might have, but don’t mistake that for a lack of intrigue. There’s still a story here-one that could either simmer until the offseason or suddenly explode before Thursday hits.
