Ben Simmons Brought Extra Edge To The Kings Before Everything Changed

Ben Simmons challenges Steve Kerr on the Warriors' decision to pass on him, as he aims to reignite his NBA career with the Sacramento Kings.

Ben Simmons didn’t keep his feelings to himself when Golden State passed on him.

During a preseason game, the Kings guard went straight to Steve Kerr and let the Warriors coach know he noticed the missed chance. Simmons later recounted the moment in an interview with Andscape’s Marc J. Spears.

“I said something to Steve. I said, ‘Y’all didn’t want me?’”

Simmons recalled. “And [Kerr] said, ‘I didn’t know if you were healthy.’”

Simmons wasn’t done there. He pushed back on the logic behind Golden State’s decision, making it clear he viewed the issue as a matter of evaluation.

“And I was like, ‘OK. That’s why you have people that do their job and go fly out and see.’

But it is what it is. That’s just me being competitive.

It wasn’t personal,” Simmons added.

He also said he spoke with Stephen Curry after the exchange and told the Warriors star, “I told you. I’m ready.”

Golden State was reportedly one of the teams interested in Simmons before he signed a $3.5 million guaranteed contract with the Sacramento Kings. The New York Knicks also looked into bringing him in on a training camp deal.

Simmons came into the season trying to get his NBA career back on track after spending the previous year away from the league. Sacramento liked what it saw in a workout, and Simmons later appeared in preseason action before a torn Achilles ended his 2026-27 season before it could even begin.

Before that injury, he showed some signs of life in limited preseason run. In Sacramento’s exhibition finale against the San Antonio Spurs, he put up 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in 26 minutes.

Former Kings Lottery Pick Just Reached A Tough Career Crossroads

Killian Hayes has reached a point that looked unlikely when he went No. 7 overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. After the Kings declined his second-year contract option, he became a free agent and found only limited interest from NBA teams, a reminder of how quickly the league can move on from a former lottery pick who never quite found his footing in Sacramento or before that in Detroit.

Hayes has now taken his next step overseas, signing with Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball Super League. For the Kings, it is another small footnote in a roster churn that has already moved on from him, but for Hayes it represents a crossroads in real time, a chance to rebuild value and reset a career that once carried far bigger expectations. Kings' Ugly Start Is Raising A Bigger Fear In Sacramento

The early returns in Sacramento have been rough enough to raise familiar questions about whether this roster can find its footing before the season gets away from it. The Kings have dropped multiple games by double digits and are the only winless team left in the Western Conference, even with solid individual efforts from players such as Darius Acuff Jr., Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis.

What has made the start feel especially concerning is how many different issues are showing up at once. The defense has been leaky, the three-point shooting has lagged and injuries have already taken a toll on key pieces, leaving Doug Christie still searching for a combination that can get the group moving in the same direction. Kings Face A Bigger Doug Christie Decision Than Fans Realize

The Kings 0-5 start has put Doug Christie in the middle of an early-season storm, with the team sitting at the bottom of the league in point differential and the frustration level rising fast. Still, the organization appears inclined to give Christie a fairer read once the roster is healthier, which matters in a season already distorted by injuries to key players.

For Sacramento, the bigger question is not just whether the losses stop piling up, but how much of this rough opening can really be pinned on the coach. Player development and lineup evaluation have both been complicated by the absences, leaving the Kings with a difficult decision to make about Christies first full look in charge. [Read more 🡒]
