In Piscataway, New Jersey, Rutgers basketball is gearing up for a pivotal week in Las Vegas. Head coach Steve Pikiell has his eyes set on victory in 'The Crown,' a tournament that promises to be a test of both strategy and execution.
This season marks a significant shift for Rutgers. Unlike last year, the team is closing out with momentum, bolstered by changes in the transfer portal timeline and the addition of key personnel. With Keli Zinn as the new athletic director and Rob Sullivan stepping in as the general manager for men's basketball, Pikiell's focus can remain squarely on the court.
Sullivan, who joined Rutgers last October, brings a wealth of experience from his time at Saint Joseph. His full-time role with men's basketball allows Pikiell to concentrate on game preparation without the added pressure of managing transfer portal logistics.
"We've got a solid plan for the portal," Pikiell shared after a recent practice. "The portal opens on April 7, and with Rob handling things, we're ready. The phones are always ringing, whether we're in Vegas or Piscataway, but with our game plan, we're set."
Sullivan's expertise in navigating the complexities of NIL and the transfer portal has been invaluable. His ability to scout talent and communicate effectively with agents and players is crucial for the team's roster management.
Reflecting on Sullivan's impact, Pikiell noted, "I wish we had someone like him three or four years ago. The landscape changes constantly, and having someone experienced is key. Rules evolve, and we're always learning."
As the team prepares for Creighton and other upcoming challenges, Pikiell appreciates having Sullivan focused solely on personnel matters. "Having someone who wakes up thinking about this is huge," he said. "He's organized, experienced, and we're in a great position with our plan."
With these strategic shifts and a strong support team, Rutgers is poised to make waves in Las Vegas and beyond.
