Rutgers Womens Lacrosse Makes Statement In USC Rout

Rutgers women's lacrosse team delivered a historic win against USC with a commanding 15-8 victory, showcasing stellar performances across the field.

In a thrilling matchup at Rawlinson Stadium, Rutgers women's lacrosse team showcased their prowess with a commanding 15-8 victory over USC. This win marked a significant milestone for the Scarlet Knights, as it was their first triumph over the Trojans in program history and their second consecutive Big Ten Conference victory.

The Scarlet Knights were firing on all cylinders, converting 60 percent of their shots. Sophomore standout Caroline Ling was a force to be reckoned with, netting a game-high five goals and adding two assists to her impressive performance.

Freshman Kate Theofield also made her presence felt, scoring four goals, while fellow newcomer Annalise Messina chipped in with two. Senior Lily Dixon was in top form, dishing out four assists, setting a new career high with 37 helpers for the season.

Defensively, Rutgers was rock-solid, allowing just eight goals for the second game in a row. Sophomore goalie Stella Quilty was a wall in the net, stopping 12 shots from the Trojans.

The Scarlet Knights' defense was relentless, forcing USC into 12 turnovers. Senior Katie Buck dominated the draw controls, securing a game-high six.

USC initially took a 2-1 lead, but Rutgers responded with a blistering 7-0 run that spanned the first two quarters. Ling was instrumental in this surge, scoring twice in the first quarter. A slick pass from Dixon to sophomore Hilary Elsner capped off the quarter, giving Rutgers a 5-2 lead.

The Scarlet Knights kept the momentum rolling with three quick goals after the first break. Senior Kayleigh Coughlin notched her third goal of the season, Theofield converted a free position shot, and Buck's interception led to another Ling goal, extending the lead to 8-2 midway through the second quarter.

The Trojans fought back with two goals, but Elsner's connection with Theofield ensured a 9-4 advantage at halftime. Quilty wrapped up the first half with four crucial saves, while the defense forced four more turnovers.

USC tried to rally with two goals after halftime, but Rutgers shut the door with a 3-0 run to close the third quarter. Ling assisted sophomore Delainey Sutley for her first goal, while Theofield and Messina added to the tally, putting Rutgers up 12-6 entering the final quarter.

The Trojans managed to cut the deficit to four, but Rutgers responded decisively with another 3-0 run. Ling sealed the deal with two more goals, and freshman Gabby Mariani provided the final touch, securing a 15-8 victory for the Scarlet Knights.
