Maryland’s collapse against Rutgers proved costly in more ways than one.
Less than 24 hours after the Terrapins let a 23-13 lead slip away in a 37-30 loss at SECU Stadium, head coach Mike Locksley fired defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Ted Monachino on Sunday. The move came as Maryland (2-5, 0-4) entered its first and only bye week of the fall.
“I appreciate Ted’s hard work and dedication to our program during his time in College Park,” Locksley said in a statement. “As I evaluate our program, I believe this change is necessary. We wish Ted all the best moving forward.”
The timing followed a brutal finish against the Scarlet Knights (2-4, 1-2). Maryland led by 10 before Rutgers ripped off 24 unanswered points over the first 26 minutes of the second half and seized control.
The Terrapins still had one last surge left in them. They scored a touchdown with 2:17 remaining, then got a stop to force one more possession, but the comeback came up 11 yards short.
On third down, DeJuan Williams dropped a pass with so much space in front of him that he might have been able to walk into the end zone. Then, on fourth down, Malik Washington seemed to hit Dorian Fleming in the end zone, but the wide receiver was ruled out of bounds and the call stood after video review.
The loss denied Maryland its first Big Ten win of the season and ended Monachino’s run on the staff.

KJ Duff Is Giving Rutgers Fans A Bigger Reason To Dream
KJ Duff has become one of the biggest reasons Rutgers passing game has started to feel dangerous, and his latest breakout came in a 37-30 win over Maryland. The junior wide receiver was the most explosive target on the field, finishing with nine catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns as the Scarlet Knights kept pace in a game that turned into a showcase for Dylan Lonergan, who threw for 291 yards and three scores.
Greg Schiano had plenty to like afterward, and Duffs production now carries a little extra weight beyond one strong afternoon. His scoring output has him closing in on a place in the program record book, which gives Rutgers fans something to track as the season moves forward and makes every big catch feel a little more significant. Rutgers Has A Rare Shot To End A Brutal Drought At Northwestern
Next Saturday at Northwesterns new stadium, Rutgers gets one of those rare chances that can quietly hang over a program for years. The Scarlet Knights are headed in as underdogs against the No. 24 Wildcats, but the bigger backdrop is hard to miss: a matchup with a ranked opponent and a setting that gives Rutgers a chance to measure itself against the kind of team it has struggled to beat for a long time.
The urgency comes from the calendar as much as the opponent. Rutgers has limited opportunities left this season to change its fortunes against ranked teams, which makes this trip feel especially important even with Northwestern favored. For a team still looking to break through in those spots, this is the kind of game that can either become another missed chance or the one that finally starts to change the conversation. Rutgers Gave Fans A Real Reason To Debate This Team's Progress
Rutgers walked into Madison Square Garden and gave itself plenty of reason for optimism, even in an exhibition against a St. Johns team widely expected to make a deep NCAA Tournament run. The Scarlet Knights controlled the first half and showed clear signs of offseason progress, with Christian Gurdak and Tariq Francis both making their presence felt against a high-level opponent.
The game eventually stretched into a long, chaotic test of depth and resolve, and Rutgers was forced to answer the kind of questions that only a night like this can create. The final result left the Scarlet Knights with a loss, but the way they competed for stretches against a talented St. Johns group made it a useful measuring stick for where this roster is headed.
