Rutgers will walk into Friday night’s game at Boston College with a tribute stitched into every part of its look.
The Scarlet Knights unveiled special uniforms Monday for the matchup at Alumni Stadium, marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a scarlet-heavy design and “NEVER FORGET” running down the side of the pants. The helmets carry the most striking detail: No. 37, a nod to the 37 Rutgers alumni who were among those killed on Sept. 11, 2001.
That number ties the uniform directly to the university’s own loss. For Rutgers, this is not just a date on the calendar or a historical marker.
The school sits less than 40 miles from Manhattan, and the attacks hit close to home for the New Brunswick community and the wider New Jersey area. Greg Schiano has also made it a point to teach his players about Sept. 11, especially with many members of the current roster born years after the attacks.
The tribute, then, is bigger than a one-night uniform reveal. It becomes a way to carry that memory forward.
Friday’s game already had meaning built into it on Boston College’s side.
The Eagles will play their annual Red Bandanna Game, honoring former lacrosse player and Boston College alumnus Welles Crowther. Crowther died while helping others escape the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept.
11, 2001. The red bandana he wore over his face as he guided people through the smoke became the symbol of the program’s yearly tribute.
Boston College’s players will wear white jerseys with the red bandana design on the sleeves, and the team said on X that the game will be a White Out. Each jersey will also include “For Welles” on the nameplate.
The Red Bandanna Game has become a major part of the Eagles’ identity. After a tribute game in 2011 for Welles and the 21 other BC alumni who died that day, the school made it an annual tradition in 2014 when it first used the uniforms and upset then-No.
9 USC. Since then, Boston College has continued to set aside one home game each year for Crowther’s honor.
There have been memorable nights along the way. In 2023, the Eagles nearly stunned #3 Florida State before falling 31-29 to the eventual 13-0 ACC champions. Last year, they trailed Michigan State 13-6 at halftime and then came back for a 23-19 win in a rainy, emotional game at Alumni Stadium.
Rutgers is stepping into that setting after a rough opener of its own, having been stunned 37-21 by UMass at home. Boston College also comes in looking for a reset after a 34-15 loss to Cincinnati. What had looked like a fairly routine early-season game now carries more weight for both teams as they try to get moving in the right direction.
Still, the bigger story Friday won’t be the standings or the scoreboard.
Rutgers will be honoring the 37 alumni it lost on Sept. 11 with “NEVER FORGET” and No. 37 on its helmets. Boston College will be wearing its Red Bandanna uniforms for Welles Crowther. And in a game that already carries so much meaning, both teams will take the field with reminders that some nights reach far beyond football.
