Rutgers track and field kicked off their outdoor season with a bang, setting records in both the men's 4x100 relay and pole vault. The Scarlet Knights split their team between the Hurricane Invitational and the USF Alumni Invitational, and the results were nothing short of spectacular.
Director of track & field Bobby Farrell was thrilled, noting the impressive NCAA qualifying performances and the breaking of two school records. Brian O'Sullivan stole the spotlight by setting a new school record in the pole vault, clearing 5.55m (18' 2.5"), surpassing the previous mark set by his brother.
The 4x100-meter relay team-comprising Daniel Duncan, Shamali Whittle, Greg McQueen, and Zach Love-sprinted to a new school record of 39.37, beating the old record from 2021.
The Scarlet Knights didn't stop there, delivering 11 performances that made it onto Rutgers' top 10 list. Malachi Yehudah claimed victory in the high jump at the USF Alumni Invitational with a leap of 2.15m (7' 0.5"), the third-best in school history. In the triple jump, Donavan Anderson and Joseph Oduro secured second and third places, respectively.
In the long jump, Sincere Robinson and Zach Love took second and third, with Robinson's jump marking the second-best in program history. Ryan Merlino also made his mark in the pole vault, joining the top 10 list with a height of 5.00m (16' 4.75").
Daniel Duncan added to his accolades with top-10 times in both the 100-meter and 200-meter events. On the women's side, Cynthia Boakye ran the fourth-fastest 200-meter time in school history, while Paige Floriea triumphed in the long jump. Emma Baeyens finished strong in the 5,000-meter race.
Over at the Hurricane Invitational, the throws group was equally impressive. Justin Kolpan won the javelin, while Robert Paneque and Nicholas Vannatta completed a clean sweep of the podium. Andrew Krall's hammer throw earned him a second-place finish and a spot in the top 10 all-time throws.
Shawn Brady showed versatility, securing second in the shot put and third in the discus. Meanwhile, Tey'ana Ames posted the second-best all-time throw in the women's shot put. Alianna Eucker led the women's javelin, with Riley Brazier and Malina Bohlmann following closely.
The Scarlet Knights are set to continue their momentum with upcoming competitions at the Raleigh Relays and UCF Knights Invitational. Keep an eye on Rutgers as they look to build on this record-breaking start.
