Rutgers swimming and diving finished the season-opening Rutgers Invitational with a loud statement on Saturday, piling up first-place finishes across the pool and the boards.
The Scarlet Knights racked up nine wins on the day, along with 16 top-three finishes and three new top-10 marks in program history. Over the two-day meet, Rutgers finished with 14 first-place efforts and 28 top-three results.
The morning session got rolling with Ana Hazlehurst taking the 400 IM in 4:23.76, beating the runner-up by nearly seven seconds. Sofia Bartoloni followed with a win in the 100 breaststroke, clocking 1:03.21. Rutgers then closed the session with a relay victory, as freshmen Journei Webster and Madelyn Cassidy teamed with Emilianna Gonzalez and Anna Vlachou for a 3:22.25 in the 400 free relay, good for a win by more than four seconds.
Rutgers also picked up strong individual swims in the morning. Vlachou finished second in the 100 fly in 53.52, while freshman Grace Sorensen was fourth in that race. Florence Robitaille added a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke, touching in 55.60.
The diving well was just as productive. In the 1-meter competition, Rutgers claimed the top four spots.
Katerina Hoffman won with 311.60, a mark that was her best on 1-meter and moved her to sixth all-time at Rutgers. Bailee Sturgill took second with 297.80, also posting her best 1-meter score to rank ninth in school history.
Gianna Lawrence finished third with 271.40, and Madilyn Varnum was fourth with 265.85.
The evening session started with Grace Sorensen placing third in the 1000 free in 10:18.50, and Rutgers kept the pressure on from there. Robitaille won the 200 back in 1:58.29, with first-year competitor Valentina Giannini taking third in 2:01.42. In the 100 free, Rutgers went 1-2, as school record holder Anna Vlachou won in 48.87 and Emilianna Gonzalez was right behind in 49.88, the seventh-fastest time in program history.
Bartoloni added her second breaststroke win of the day by taking the 200 breast in 2:15.73. Sorensen grabbed another top finish in the 200 butterfly, winning in 2:02.60 for her third top-four result of the day, while captain Ellie Schinsky finished third in 2:03.52. Rutgers wrapped the meet with another relay victory, as Valentina Giannini, Bartoloni, Vlachou and Gonzalez won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.25.
Rutgers returns to action next weekend, heading to Lynchburg, Va. for a tri-meet against Liberty and James Madison on Friday and Saturday.

Rutgers Debut Brought Back One Concern Fans Hoped Was Gone
Rutgers first look of the preseason came with a familiar feel in more ways than one. In an exhibition against Villanova, associate head coach Brandin Knight handled the sideline duties for Steve Pikiell, and the Scarlet Knights dropped a 77-75 decision in a game that echoed too many of last seasons offensive stretches. Even in an early setting, the possession flow and scoring patterns looked like concerns the program had hoped to move past.
There were also absences to note, with Tariq Francis, Will Sydnor, Dorin Buca and Martin Tonejc not taking part. The bright spot was Virginia Tech transfer Christian Gurdak, who made his Rutgers debut at center and gave the staff something to build on in the frontcourt. For a team still sorting out its identity before the games start to count, that kind of first impression matters, even if the bigger questions from the exhibition remain unresolved. [Read more 🡒]
Rutgers Heads Into A Defining Big Ten Test With Pressure Rising
The Week 7 trip to Maryland arrives with Rutgers still searching for its first breakthrough in Power Four play, and the early betting market reflects how tight the matchup looks on paper. The Scarlet Knights opened as 4.5-point underdogs on the road, a nod to a game that pits two teams still trying to steady themselves after defensive struggles have defined much of the season.
Greg Schianos group is walking into a tough setting as well, with Maryland getting its Homecoming spotlight and an offense that leans heavily on the pass. ESPNs matchup predictor also gives the Terps the edge, so Rutgers is facing more than just another conference road game, it is staring at a test that could say plenty about where this team stands in Big Ten play. Rutgers Bye Week Made The Rest Of This Schedule Feel Different
Rutgers spent its bye week watching the shape of the rest of its schedule change around it. While the Scarlet Knights were idle, several of the opponents still ahead of them were forced to keep taking hits, from Michigan States narrow overtime loss to Illinois to Marylands defeat at Ohio State, a result that at least hinted at some progress for the Terrapins despite the final margin.
The bigger picture now looks even more varied for Rutgers, with Nebraska still carrying the profile of a dangerous team even after a late loss to Indiana, Penn State sliding through three straight Big Ten losses, and UCLA staying unbeaten under new coach Bob Chesney. UMass has also been competitive lately, even in a recent close loss to Miami (Ohio), so the bye week did not just give Rutgers a breather, it also gave the rest of the slate a different look.
