Rutgers had to adjust at quarterback on Saturday night, and the reason was clear by the end of the second quarter: Dylan Lonergan was injured.
Head coach Greg Schiano said after the Scarlet Knights’ 47-15 loss to Indiana at SHI Stadium that Lonergan left late in the second quarter and that the team is still waiting for more information.
“Dylan got injured,” Schiano said. “We just got to wait and see.”
Lonergan’s night ended after Rutgers’ fifth drive, when he was stopped on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 at the Rutgers 34-yard line. On the play, he appeared to take a hard hit to the head when he came down on the turf.
He went to the medical tent after that sequence, then later sprinted on the sideline under the direction of a team trainer. By halftime, he was with his teammates heading up the tunnel.
Before leaving, Lonergan had thrown for 67 yards on 5-of-10 passing. Most of that production came on a 41-yard completion to KJ Duff.
With Lonergan out, Rutgers turned to backup AJ Surace, who handled the moment well. Surace finished 6 of 10 for 128 yards and a touchdown.
His biggest play came in the third quarter, when he hit Ben Black for a 53-yard touchdown pass that trimmed Rutgers’ deficit to 30 points. He also connected with freshman Dyzier Carter on a 35-yard gain.
Third-string quarterback Sean Ashenfelder also saw a little action. He ran a designed play in the second quarter that lost three yards, then came back for the final three snaps of the game in the fourth quarter.

Schiano Faces A Rutgers Reckoning After Another Humiliating Black Out
Rutgers annual Black Out at SHI Stadium turned into another painfully familiar night, with Indiana rolling to a 47-15 win and the home crowd thinning long before the final whistle. The usual pageantry was still there in theory, but the game quickly stopped feeling like a showcase and started feeling like an exodus, with many fans heading for the exits as the score kept widening.
Greg Schiano did not try to dress it up afterward, acknowledging the performance fell well short of standard and pointing toward possible changes as the Scarlet Knights head into a bye week. For a program trying to steady itself, the timing of a lopsided loss at home makes the next stretch more important, and more uncomfortable, than a routine reset usually would be. [Read more 🡒]
Greg Schiano Faces One Rutgers Decision That Could Define This Season
Rutgers heads into its bye week with Greg Schiano staring at a familiar kind of midseason crossroads, only this one comes after a rough 47-15 loss to Indiana and a start that has already tested the programs patience. Schiano said the next stretch will bring tough decisions as he tries to get the Scarlet Knights moving in the right direction, with defensive struggles and injuries to key players both part of the picture.
Schiano sounded intent on treating the pause as a reset, stressing the need to narrow the focus to what this roster can do effectively right now rather than what it hoped to be in September. Even with the early disappointment, he said he believes Rutgers will win games this season, which is the kind of confidence the locker room needs as the staff sorts through what changes can actually make a difference. Former Rutgers QB Athan Kaliakmanis Just Added To Program History
Athan Kaliakmanis finally got his first NFL snaps in a real game Sunday, stepping in for the Washington Commanders after Marcus Mariota was injured against the Indianapolis Colts. The former Rutgers quarterback handled the moment with some poise, completing 15 of 33 passes for 186 yards and throwing a 47-yard touchdown while adding 16 yards on the ground.
For Rutgers, it was the kind of small but notable pro-football milestone that still matters. Kaliakmanis became the first former Scarlet Knights quarterback to appear in an NFL regular-season game since 2017, and only the seventh Rutgers player to ever throw a touchdown pass in the league, a reminder that even a brief debut can add a new line to program history.
