Rutgers Stuns Wagner With Stellar Pitching Performance

Rutgers baseball storms back from an early deficit to secure its 11th straight win over Wagner, showcasing key performances on both sides of the field.

In a spirited showdown at Bainton Field, Rutgers baseball extended their winning streak against Wagner with an 8-5 victory on Tuesday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights, now 9-6 for the season, showcased both resilience and skill, driven by standout performances from pitchers Jacob Pedersen and Andrew Rondini.

Wagner jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the second inning. However, Rutgers responded with a determined comeback, scoring seven unanswered runs to seize control of the game. The rally began in the bottom of the second when Ryan Jaros delivered a crucial single, and Matt Chatelle followed with a double, narrowing the gap to 3-2.

Rutgers continued to apply pressure with bases-loaded walks by Yomar Carreras in the fourth and Ryan Jaros in the fifth, pushing them ahead. Chatelle, not content with just one RBI, struck again in the fifth with a two-run single, while Joey Erace added to the tally with an RBI single, making it 7-3.

Wagner managed to claw back two runs in the sixth, but the Scarlet Knights had more in store. Trey Wells capitalized on a wild pitch in the eighth to score from second, providing Rutgers with a comfortable cushion.

Jacob Pedersen was instrumental in stabilizing the game after the early Wagner surge. Coming in from the bullpen, he delivered 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit, earning his first win of the season. When Wagner threatened again in the sixth, Andrew Rondini took the mound, expertly stranding runners and closing the game with 3.1 scoreless innings of his own, securing the save.

Offensively, Wells crossed the plate three times, while Chatelle and Erace each went 2-for-4, with Chatelle driving in three runs. The Scarlet Knights' balanced attack and solid pitching were key to their success.

Rutgers looks to keep the momentum going as they face Fordham in another home game tomorrow at 1 p.m. Fans can expect more exciting baseball as the Scarlet Knights aim to build on their impressive form.
