In a thrilling Friday night showdown at Bainton Field, Rutgers baseball showcased resilience and skill, edging out Michigan with a 4-3 victory in their series opener.
The Scarlet Knights, now sitting at 15-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play, found themselves in a hole early on, trailing 3-0. But the bullpen's stellar performance, delivering 4.2 innings of shutout baseball, paved the way for a comeback against the Wolverines, who are 12-13 and 1-6 in conference action.
Rutgers’ offense came alive with four unanswered runs, with the pivotal moment arriving in the sixth inning. Peyton Bonds stepped up with two on and two out, delivering a clutch RBI single to level the score at three. Not to be outdone, Tristan Salinas followed suit, knocking in the go-ahead run to make it 4-3.
Starting pitcher Zack Konstantinovsky battled through 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three. His efforts kept Rutgers within striking distance. Relief came in the form of Jordan Saviñon, who deftly navigated a jam with a groundout and popup to keep the Scarlet Knights in the game.
In the fourth inning, Joey Erace's infield single and Quinten Perilli's RBI single trimmed the deficit, setting the stage for the late-game heroics.
Michigan threatened in the sixth with the bases loaded and just one out, but Zach Gleason emerged as the hero, inducing a critical strikeout and groundout to escape unscathed. His clutch performance shifted momentum back to Rutgers.
Andrew Rondini took over with two outs in the seventh, stranding a runner with a timely flyout. As the Wolverines attempted a late rally in the eighth, Joe Mazza was called upon to seal the deal. He delivered with a strikeout to end the inning and followed up with a flawless ninth, securing his first save of the season.
