In a Saturday showdown at Illinois Field, Rutgers baseball found themselves on the losing end against the Fighting Illini, with a final score of 12-6. This game marked another tough outing for the Scarlet Knights, who now sit at 12-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Illinois, improving to 12-9 and 4-4 in the Big Ten, secured the series with this win.
The game turned in the third inning when Illinois unleashed a powerful offensive burst. A grand slam followed by an RBI double catapulted them to a commanding 5-0 lead.
Rutgers managed to get on the board in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single from Matt Chatelle. However, Illinois quickly responded with an RBI single of their own in the bottom half, and then a three-run homer in the fifth, stretching their lead to 9-1.
Despite the deficit, Rutgers showed resilience. Ryan Jaros delivered an RBI double in the sixth, and Peyton Bonds added an RBI single in the seventh.
The highlight came when Charlie Meglio launched a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, cutting the lead to 9-6. Meglio's homer streak now stands at three consecutive games.
Yet, Illinois wasn't done. They tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, pushing the score to 12-5. Rutgers managed one last RBI single from Joey Erace, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback.
The Scarlet Knights will look to bounce back in the series finale, set for Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. Fans will be eager to see if Rutgers can rally and finish strong against a tough Illinois squad.
