Rutgers Softball Stuns FDU with Home Opener Sweep at Renovated Complex

Rutgers softball made an impressive debut at their revamped complex, dominating FDU with explosive offense and solid pitching to kick off their home season.

Rutgers softball celebrated the grand opening of their revamped Rutgers Softball Complex in style, sweeping FDU in a doubleheader that showcased their offensive prowess and pitching strength.

In the first game, Rutgers shut out FDU, 8-0, in six innings. The Scarlet Knights broke the deadlock in the fourth inning, thanks to a two-run triple by Addie Osborne. Makenna Coleman added to the fireworks with a three-run homer in the fifth, sealing the victory.

Sophomore Kelsey Hoekstra was dominant on the mound, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six. Junior Brooke Shifflett provided solid relief, striking out three more without giving up a hit.

The second game saw Rutgers explode with a 10-run first inning, highlighted by Mia Mitchell's grand slam, leading to a commanding 17-3 win. This victory marked their largest margin since 2023.

The Scarlet Knights' offense was relentless, with Osborne going 3-for-4, driving in five runs, and Coleman contributing three RBIs. Freshman Marley Caldwell earned the win, improving to 2-0 by holding FDU to two hits over three innings.

Rutgers kept the pressure on, adding runs in the second and third innings, with Osborne hitting another homer and Stephanie Kraska and Rachel Millan driving in runs to extend the lead. The Scarlet Knights finished with a 17-0 lead before FDU managed to get on the board in the fifth.

Next up, Rutgers faces No. 7 UCLA in their first Big Ten home series, promising an exciting matchup. The series kicks off with a pregame ceremony on Saturday, followed by televised games on Sunday and Monday on BTN.
