Rutgers field hockey is back home for a two-game stretch this weekend, with Penn State coming to Piscataway on Friday at 3 p.m. for the Blackout Game before American visits on Sunday at noon.
The Scarlet Knights are trying to turn the page on a road loss at No. 2 Maryland and build off Sunday’s 5-0 win over La Salle. Rutgers enters the weekend at 5-5, and this will be its first home Big Ten game of the season.
There’s also a milestone in play for Meredith Civico. The Rutgers head coach has 149 career wins and is one away from No. 150 at the helm of the Scarlet Knights.
Friday’s game carries a little extra pageantry, too. It’s Homecoming weekend, and former Rutgers standout Amy Lewis will be honored before being inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame. Lewis was the 2008 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in goals with 71 and points with 159, and earned All-American honors in 2008 along with three All-Region selections and four All-Big East nods.
Rutgers has found plenty of scoring punch already this season. Talia Schenck scored twice against La Salle, giving the Scarlet Knights six different multi-goal scorers on the year. Olivia Fraticelli leads the team with eight goals, followed by Laura Loycke with five and Anna Cogdell with four.
Penn State comes in at 4-4 under first-year head coach Hannah Prince, who previously guided Saint Joseph’s to four NCAA Tournaments, including the 2024 title game. The Nittany Lions have beaten Lock Haven, Villanova, Delaware and Bucknell, while all four of their losses have come against ranked opponents.
That list includes one-goal setbacks to No. 5 Virginia in overtime, No.
4 Princeton and No. 19 Maryland, plus a Big Ten opener against No.
5 Maryland.
Ella Gaitan leads Penn State with seven goals, while Sienna Dunn has been a major distributor with nine assists, which puts her first in the NCAA in assists per game at 1.13. In net, Aby Deverka has posted a .739 save percentage and a 1.53 goals-against average.
The history between Rutgers and Penn State has tilted the Scarlet Knights’ way lately. Rutgers is 11-19-3 all-time in the series, but it has won the last three meetings and seven of the last eight since 2021. That stretch includes five ranked wins over Penn State, four of them against top-10 teams, along with a 3-0 NCAA Tournament win in 1984 and a 2-1 victory in the 2021 Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
American arrives in Piscataway with a 6-4 record before a Friday matchup against Lafayette. Sophie Willemse leads the Eagles with 13 points on five goals and three assists, while Jordan Reicher has also scored five times. Emilia Winkler has eight assists, good for ninth in the NCAA in assists per game, and Teagan Harmon has a .639 save percentage and a 1.34 goals-against average.
Rutgers is 2-5 all-time against American. The Eagles won the first five meetings, all between 2000 and 2010, but the Scarlet Knights have taken the last two - a 2-1 road win in 2015 and a 1-0 overtime home win in 2018, which came in the regular-season finale on Senior Day.
Both games will stream on B1G+, with Dom Savino on play-by-play and former Rutgers All-American Gianna Glatz handling color commentary on Sunday.
After this weekend, Rutgers has one game next week, a Friday trip to Ohio State.

Rutgers Has One Last Chance To Prove Something Against Indiana
Greg Schiano didnt downplay the task ahead as Rutgers prepares to face Indiana, instead using the matchup to acknowledge how far Curt Cignetti has pushed the Hoosiers. He praised Indianas rise into a national champion and a team that has settled in as a consistent contender, which is a reminder of the standard Rutgers is chasing as it keeps trying to turn its own rebuild into something sturdier. For Schiano, this is as much about measuring progress as it is about the scoreboard.
The Scarlet Knights have spent recent weeks trying to reinforce their culture and show more consistency, and Indiana offers a blunt test of whether that work is translating. Rutgers knows it is meeting a program that now expects to win, which only sharpens the stakes for a team still looking to prove it belongs in that conversation. The challenge is obvious, but so is the opportunity to leave with a better sense of where the program stands. [Read more 🡒]
Rutgers Suddenly Has A Recruiting Surge Fans Needed To See
Rutgers basketball has spent years trying to convince recruits that the path in Piscataway can lead somewhere bigger, and the early returns for the 2027 class suggest that message is starting to land. The Scarlet Knights have already landed three four-star prospects in RJ Moore, Brandon Woodard and Korey Francis, a haul that gives the program real momentum on the recruiting trail and a much-needed boost for a fan base eager to see the roster-building pay off.
For a program that has not been a regular NCAA Tournament presence, the selling points have had to be more than promises, and the staff appears to be leaning on development as much as on opportunity. Athletic director Keli Zinn and general manager Rob Sullivan have become part of that pitch, with Rutgers showing progress in both high school recruiting and the transfer portal since Sullivan arrived. There is still a long way to go before any of it translates into wins, but the pipeline is suddenly looking a lot sturdier. [Read more 🡒]
Rutgers Fans Will Love This New Game Day Nod In Hoboken
Rutgers fans looking for a game-day stop outside the stadium have a new option in Hoboken, where The Green Rock Tap + Grill has rolled out Rutgers-inspired fat sandwiches for football Saturdays this season. It is a familiar kind of New Jersey menu move, built for people who want something indulgent, portable and tied to the rhythms of college football.
The bar is offering two versions, the Fat Rock and the Fat Lucas, each loaded with the sort of fried foods and meats that have long made fat sandwiches a local staple. The sandwiches will be available throughout the college football season on Rutgers game days, giving fans another reason to circle the calendar whenever the Scarlet Knights are on. [Read more 🡒]
