Rutgers’ 2026 recruiting class got a fresh boost this week, and the numbers still point to a group that belongs near the top of the Big Ten picture.
In the latest 247Sports composite team rankings released Wednesday, the Scarlet Knights sit No. 10 in the conference with 24 high school commitments and 221.20 recruiting points. That leaves Rutgers within striking distance of climbing the league ladder as the cycle keeps moving.
The biggest reason for the rise is Aiden Gibson. The four-star running back, who was previously a 2027 commit and flipped from Penn State, is now part of Rutgers’ 2026 group after reclassifying. That move gives the Scarlet Knights a stronger class on paper and helps push the group from No. 36 nationally to a spot that could keep improving in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
Gibson is now the highest-rated pledge in the class. The 6-foot-1, 212-pound back from Woodruff, South Carolina, carries a 91 composite rating and is ranked among the nation’s top running backs in the class.
His addition also gives Rutgers its fifth four-star commitment in the 2026 cycle, another solid marker for Greg Schiano and his staff.
The class already includes several other highly regarded prospects. Wide receiver Dyzier Carter, defensive back Devonte Anderson, wide receiver Rinaldo Callaway III and safety Messiah Tilson all have composite ratings of 90 or better. Rutgers has also loaded up on size up front on both sides of the ball while adding plenty of skill talent to the mix.
The 24-player class is made up of 21 early enrollees, two additional signees and Gibson as the lone remaining hard commitment. It spans every position group, with quarterback Xavier Stearn, running back Michael Dukes III, tight ends DJ Howerton and Brady Owens, multiple offensive linemen and a secondary stocked with several nationally recruited defensive backs.
On average, Rutgers’ 2026 prospects hold an 87.87 rating, and the class plus the incoming group has the Scarlet Knights inside the top 40 nationally for the cycle. Rutgers is also working to build out the 2026-2027 roster through the transfer portal, where it has added 15 players. That group includes quarterback Dylan Lonergan, linebacker Sean Allison, corner Kevyn Humes and several experienced linemen.
In the Big Ten standings, Rutgers is more than 5 recruiting points behind ninth-place Indiana and fewer than 8 points back of seventh-place Iowa. Minnesota sits in eighth, with the Scarlet Knights still in position to move into the upper half of the conference rankings before the cycle ends.
USC leads the Big Ten with the nation’s highest-rated conference class, followed by Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan and Washington.
With months still left before the early signing period, Rutgers has a chance to keep stacking talent through both the high school ranks and the portal, and Schiano’s group remains in the hunt for a strong finish.
