In anticipation of the 2026 NFL draft, Rutgers hosted its Pro Day on Wednesday, giving 14 of its football players a chance to shine in front of 46 pro personnel from 36 NFL and CFL teams. This annual showcase featured standard drills like the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, and position-specific events, offering these athletes a platform to make their case for the next level.
Among the participants were senior quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, wide receiver DT Sheffield, offensive linemen Bryan Felter and Gus Zilinskas, tight ends Kenny Fletcher Jr. and Colin Weber, defensive backs Jett Elad, Cam Miller, and Timmy Ward, defensive linemen Oliver Billotte, Eric O'Neill, and Bradley Weaver, and linebacker Dariel Djabome.
With no Scarlet Knights invited to the combine this year, this Pro Day was their prime opportunity to catch the eyes of scouts. Despite flying under the radar in recent years, Rutgers players have consistently carved out solid careers, much like rookie standout Kyle Monongai. Head coach Greg Schiano emphasized the program’s commitment to preparing players for the NFL, stating, "We talk to our guys about getting ready for many things, and the NFL is one of those."
Kaliakmanis, who has been a focal point all season, showcased his skills after amassing 3,124 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. Schiano praised his physical attributes and football IQ, predicting a bright NFL future for him. Kaliakmanis, reflecting on the day, said, "Focus and mental toughness, that's what I was thinking about coming in here today."
After transferring from Minnesota, Kaliakmanis earned his starting position through hard work and determination, a journey Schiano highlighted as exemplary of a true competitor.
Sheffield also turned heads, particularly with his impressive vertical jump. In his single season with the Knights, he posted 577 yards and five touchdowns, adding to an already promising resume from his time leading the American Conference in touchdowns.
Eric O'Neill, another standout, showed his versatility and relentless play style. Despite a dip in sack numbers after moving from James Madison to the Big Ten, his potential remains clear. O'Neill, who recorded 17 solo tackles and nine and a half tackles for loss, spoke about how facing top-tier teams like Ohio State and Penn State has prepared him for the NFL challenge.
This Pro Day marked a significant milestone for these players, a culmination of years of dedication and hard work. Schiano reminded them, "You can't change the tape, but you can put on a show today. This is your chance to impress and share your story with the scouts."
While not all of them will land on a roster, the opportunity to compete at this level is a testament to their talent and determination. As Schiano noted, "With over 8 billion people in the world and only 1,696 NFL roster spots, the challenge is immense. But we're here to support them in every way possible to make that dream a reality."
