Rutgers Opens With The Kind Of Depth Fans Have Been Waiting For

Rutgers swimming and diving team dominated the opening day of the 2026-27 season at their own invitational, showcasing stellar performances and breaking records while featuring notable contributions from their promising freshmen.

Rutgers swimming and diving wasted no time making a statement to open the 2026-27 season.

On Friday night at the Rutgers Aquatics Center, the Scarlet Knights put together a sharp first day at the Rutgers Invitational, collecting five first-place finishes and 12 top-three results across five swimming events and the 1M diving board.

The freshman class was a major part of the surge. Six freshmen helped Rutgers into top-three finishes, and four true freshmen were competing in their first collegiate meet. That youth showed up right away, but so did the speed.

The biggest splash came in the opening event, where Rutgers set the pool record in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Lena Bauer, Emillianna Gonzalez, Anna Vlachou and Journei Webster combined for a 1:30.34, narrowly missing the previous school record of 1:30.33 set in 2020.

Rutgers kept the momentum rolling in the 500 Freestyle, where two freshmen landed on the podium in their debut meet. Grace Sorensen finished second in 4:55.77, and Florence Robitaille was right behind her in third at 4:56.03.

Ana Hazlehurst added another victory for the Scarlet Knights in the 200 IM, winning in 2:02.67.

Then came a Rutgers sweep in the 50 Free. Emilianna Gonzalez took first in 22.47, Anna Vlachou followed in 22.61, and Journei Webster rounded out the top three in 23.37.

The night wrapped with the 400 Medley Relay, and Rutgers closed it in style. Valentina Giannini, Sofia Bartoloni, Anna Vlachou and Journei Webster won by five seconds, finishing in 3:40.27. Another Scarlet Knight quartet - Florence Robitaille, Holland Spangler, Grace Sorensen and Emillianna Gonzalez - placed third in 3:46.75.

Rutgers was just as strong on the diving side. All four Scarlet Knight competitors finished in the top five on the 1-meter board.

Bailee Sturgill won the event with a score of 326.90, Katerina Hoffman took second at 309.80, and Madilyn Varnum finished third with a 308.60. That score moved Varnum into the program’s all-time top 10, where she now sits eighth.

Gianna Lawrence added a fifth-place finish.

Rutgers Debut Brought Back One Concern Fans Hoped Was Gone

Rutgers first look of the preseason came with a familiar feel in more ways than one. In an exhibition against Villanova, associate head coach Brandin Knight handled the sideline duties for Steve Pikiell, and the Scarlet Knights dropped a 77-75 decision in a game that echoed too many of last seasons offensive stretches. Even in an early setting, the possession flow and scoring patterns looked like concerns the program had hoped to move past.

There were also absences to note, with Tariq Francis, Will Sydnor, Dorin Buca and Martin Tonejc not taking part. The bright spot was Virginia Tech transfer Christian Gurdak, who made his Rutgers debut at center and gave the staff something to build on in the frontcourt. For a team still sorting out its identity before the games start to count, that kind of first impression matters, even if the bigger questions from the exhibition remain unresolved. [Read more 🡒]

Rutgers Heads Into A Defining Big Ten Test With Pressure Rising

The Week 7 trip to Maryland arrives with Rutgers still searching for its first breakthrough in Power Four play, and the early betting market reflects how tight the matchup looks on paper. The Scarlet Knights opened as 4.5-point underdogs on the road, a nod to a game that pits two teams still trying to steady themselves after defensive struggles have defined much of the season.

Greg Schianos group is walking into a tough setting as well, with Maryland getting its Homecoming spotlight and an offense that leans heavily on the pass. ESPNs matchup predictor also gives the Terps the edge, so Rutgers is facing more than just another conference road game, it is staring at a test that could say plenty about where this team stands in Big Ten play. Rutgers Swimming Is Showing Early Depth Fans Can Feel Good About

Rutgers swimming and diving continued to make a strong early impression at the Rutgers Invitational, closing out the second day with multiple first-place finishes and a steady stream of top-three efforts across both the pool and the boards. The Scarlet Knights looked balanced throughout the meet, with contributions from several areas and enough depth to suggest the roster is settling in well this fall.

The results also hinted at how much room this group may have to keep climbing, especially with a tri-meet against Liberty and James Madison coming next. Rutgers left the invitational with momentum from strong swimming and diving performances, and the kind of early-season showing that can give a team confidence before the schedule gets busier.
