UMass walked into Week 1 with the country’s longest losing streak against FBS opponents hanging over it. Three hours into the season, that streak was gone - and Rutgers was the one left stunned.
The Minutemen rolled to a 37-21 road win on Thursday, and the result landed with the kind of force nobody saw coming. UMass had gone 0-12 last season, yet it came out and controlled the game from the start, scoring on each of its first four possessions and not punting until there were 100 seconds left in the third quarter.
That matters because this wasn’t some weird, backdoor finish. UMass looked every bit the better team.
Rutgers entered as a 29.5-point favorite, but the Scarlet Knights never settled in and never found a way to take control. The loss snapped UMass’ 16-game skid against FBS teams, the longest active drought in the nation, and its last win over an FBS opponent had come on Oct. 28, 2023, when it beat Army 21-14.
The numbers around the upset only make it look stranger. Since 2024, FBS teams favored by 29 or more points had been 213-0.
Rutgers’ 16-point defeat was the fifth-largest by a favorite of 25-plus points since 2000. For UMass, it was the first win over a Power Four team since moving to the FBS in 2012, and the first time the program had beaten a power conference opponent since 1978.
The Minutemen had also been 0-9 all-time against Big Ten teams.
Pop Watson was right in the middle of it. The UMass quarterback spent three seasons at Virginia Tech without breaking through as a starter, then transferred and immediately gave the Minutemen a spark.
Watson, a three-star recruit and the No. 44 quarterback in the 2023 signing class, made Rutgers chase him all night with his arm and legs. He was especially sharp early, helping UMass score on its first three drives, and his touchdown pass to Joseph Griffin Jr. stood out as one of the game’s cleanest strikes.
By the end of the night, Watson had gone 18-for-21 for 189 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for 40 yards. If that kind of production shows up consistently in MAC play, UMass is going to be a problem.
The defense had its say too, and that may have been the most encouraging part for the Minutemen. Last season, UMass gave up 38.6 points per game and 433.8 total yards per game, numbers that placed the program near the bottom of the country.
Against Rutgers, it played with far more bite. UMass finished with seven tackles for loss, five sacks and a 4-0 edge in turnovers, including three interceptions of Dylan Lonergan.
One sequence summed it up best. With just under four minutes left in the third quarter, Rutgers went for it on 4th-and-1 from the UMass 11-yard line. The Minutemen held firm, turned the Scarlet Knights away, and effectively shut the door.
Rutgers did find some success through the air with KJ Duff, who gave the UMass secondary trouble several times. But the run defense was the bigger story. The Scarlet Knights got no real movement up front and managed just 1.2 yards per carry.
It’s only one game, but UMass looked nothing like the defense that was labeled the worst in the country a year ago. And after Thursday night, the Minutemen no longer look like the same old punchline either.
