Rutgers is heading into the 2026 season with confidence from Greg Schiano, but the Big Ten’s preseason outlook is telling a very different story.
In Cleveland.com’s annual preseason poll, the Scarlet Knights were slotted 17th in the 18-team league. The poll’s 16th edition was released Monday ahead of this week’s Big Ten media days in Chicago, and NJ Advance Media took part in the voting.
That bleak ranking lines up with other unofficial preseason projections around the conference. Athlon and Phil Steele both pegged Rutgers at 16th in their preseason magazines, while Lindy’s went all the way to 18th and put the Scarlet Knights last.
The projections come on the heels of a 5-7 season that ended Rutgers’ two-year run of bowl appearances. And this offseason brought major questions, even with some important pieces still in place. The Scarlet Knights overhauled a defense that was one of the worst in modern Big Ten history last fall, and they kept two of their top offensive threats in wide receiver KJ Duff and running back Antwan Raymond.
The biggest uncertainty sits at quarterback. Athan Kaliakmanis is gone to the NFL, and Rutgers has not picked a successor with training camp approaching. That leaves real doubt about whether the Scarlet Knights can keep producing at the level they have over the last two seasons.
There is at least some path forward in the schedule. Rutgers will play five teams projected to finish in the bottom half of the conference: Nebraska at 11th, Wisconsin at 12th, Northwestern at 14th, Maryland at 15th and Michigan State at 16th.
Cleveland.com’s preseason poll had Ohio State on top with 15 first-place votes, followed by Oregon with 11 and Indiana with five. The rest of the top 10 featured USC, Michigan, Penn State, Washington, Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota.
Nebraska came in 11th, followed by Wisconsin, UCLA, Northwestern, Maryland and Michigan State. Rutgers was 17th, ahead of only Purdue.
