Rutgers field hockey gave Meredith Civico a milestone win and then had to sweat a little before the afternoon was done.
On a rainy Sunday at Bauer, the Scarlet Knights beat American 4-2 in non-conference play, improving to 6-6 and delivering Civico her 150th career victory as Rutgers’ head coach. Afterward, the team marked the moment with flowers and a ceremonial Gatorade bath.
Rutgers came out firing and never gave up the lead after striking just 1:04 into the game. Frederique Vernooij set up Olivia Fraticelli for the opener, and from there the Scarlet Knights built a 3-0 cushion that looked comfortable until American made things interesting late.
Fraticelli finished with two goals, giving her a third multi-goal game of the season and moving her to a team-high 10 goals. Her 21 career goals now put her 10th all-time in Rutgers program history.
Sophie Kuiper also turned in a big day, scoring twice for her first two goals of the season. Her first came late in the opening half on a pass from Caroline DeKenipp, and she added another early in the second half to push Rutgers ahead 3-0 after 35 minutes.
American refused to go away, though. The Eagles scored twice in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to one with five minutes left before Fraticelli answered with an insurance goal in the final minute to seal it.
Rutgers finished with a 14-10 edge in shots and had to withstand 12 American penalty corners. Emily Nicholls made four saves, while DeKenipp, Vernooij and Kuiper all recorded assists.
The Scarlet Knights return to action next weekend with a road game at Ohio State on Friday.

Rutgers Suddenly Has A QB Concern Fans Can't Ignore
Rutgers had to adjust on the fly Saturday when quarterback Dylan Lonergan left the game against Indiana in the second quarter with an injury, according to head coach Greg Schiano. Before exiting, Lonergan had thrown for 67 yards, and the Scarlet Knights were forced to turn to backup AJ Surace to keep the offense moving.
Surace responded with a steady relief outing, completing 6 of 10 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown, while third-string quarterback Sean Ashenfelder also made a brief appearance. Even with the offense showing it can function beyond the starter, the bigger question now is how long Rutgers may need to lean on that depth if Lonergan is unavailable. [Read more 🡒]
Schiano Faces A Rutgers Reckoning After Another Humiliating Black Out
Rutgers annual Black Out at SHI Stadium turned into another painfully familiar night, with Indiana rolling to a 47-15 win and the home crowd thinning long before the final whistle. The usual pageantry was still there in theory, but the game quickly stopped feeling like a showcase and started feeling like an exodus, with many fans heading for the exits as the score kept widening.
Greg Schiano did not try to dress it up afterward, acknowledging the performance fell well short of standard and pointing toward possible changes as the Scarlet Knights head into a bye week. For a program trying to steady itself, the timing of a lopsided loss at home makes the next stretch more important, and more uncomfortable, than a routine reset usually would be. [Read more 🡒]
Greg Schiano Faces One Rutgers Decision That Could Define This Season
Rutgers heads into its bye week with Greg Schiano staring at a familiar kind of midseason crossroads, only this one comes after a rough 47-15 loss to Indiana and a start that has already tested the programs patience. Schiano said the next stretch will bring tough decisions as he tries to get the Scarlet Knights moving in the right direction, with defensive struggles and injuries to key players both part of the picture.
Schiano sounded intent on treating the pause as a reset, stressing the need to narrow the focus to what this roster can do effectively right now rather than what it hoped to be in September. Even with the early disappointment, he said he believes Rutgers will win games this season, which is the kind of confidence the locker room needs as the staff sorts through what changes can actually make a difference.
