Rutgers Golf Heads to Elite Invitational This Weekend in Georgia

Rutgers men's golf team gears up for a crucial showing at the Linger Longer Invitational, with postseason hopes hanging in the balance.

Rutgers men's golf is gearing up for an exciting weekend as they head to Greensboro, Georgia, for the Linger Longer Invitational. This three-day, 54-hole event, co-hosted by Kennesaw State and Mercer, kicks off on Friday at the picturesque Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee. With a strong lineup of 18 teams, including powerhouses like Georgia, Alabama, and Vanderbilt, the competition promises to be fierce.

For the Scarlet Knights, this tournament is more than just another stop on the schedule-it's a golden opportunity to bolster their postseason credentials as the regular season draws to a close. "This whole spring we've felt like we control our own destiny," head coach Rob Shutte remarked.

"We're right on the bubble, but we know we're a capable team. College golf has grown, and the competition is tough, so sometimes it's just about a few key shots."

Confidence is riding high among the Rutgers lineup, thanks to standout performances from players like sophomores Argyle Downes and Bennett Espenshade, freshman Lucas Politano, and senior Luke Koenig, who recently shone at the Johnnie-O event in Sea Island, Georgia. Koenig shared, "With three straight tournament weeks, our team has built confidence. We know we can compete for wins and are focused on finishing the spring season strong heading into the Big Ten Championship."

The Linger Longer Invitational is one of the last three events before postseason play, making consistency crucial. "We've got some great events coming up, including the Linger Longer Invitational and a strong field at Big Tens," Shutte added. "If we can stay consistent and deliver a few strong performances, we'll have a great chance to advance."

Tee times are set for 8:30 a.m. each day, with starts from both No. 1 and No. 10.

As Shutte puts it, "At the end of the day, we'll just keep going back to work. Being on the bubble is a good place compared to the alternative."

The Scarlet Knights are ready to seize the moment and make their mark.
