Rutgers gets its homecoming spotlight Saturday night, and the setting couldn’t be bigger: No. 6 Indiana comes to SHI Stadium in Piscataway for the annual blackout game, with the Scarlet Knights trying to spring a major upset in front of a sold-out crowd.
Rutgers enters at 1-3 and 0-1, while Indiana arrives 4-0 and 1-0 and carrying the kind of buzz that has become normal around Curt Cignetti’s program. The third-year head coach has taken the Hoosiers from forgotten to formidable, and the latest proof is a National Championship over Miami this past January.
That said, Rutgers has had recent success in this matchup. The Scarlet Knights have beaten Indiana three straight times, running from 2021 through 2023, all before Cignetti arrived. Since then, though, Indiana has surged into a different class entirely, going 31-2 under the new regime and riding a 20-game winning streak dating back to December 2024.
Offensively, the Hoosiers remain loaded under coordinator Mike Shanahan, now in his third season running the unit. Even after losing quarterback Fernando Mendoza to the NFL draft, Indiana hasn’t missed a beat with TCU graduate transfer Josh Hoover taking over.
Hoover has been every bit the answer. He’s thrown for 850 yards, completed 70 percent of his passes and hasn’t been intercepted. In four games, he already has the second-most touchdown passes by a Big Ten quarterback with 11, and his 204.4 passer rating ranks fourth among all FBS quarterbacks.
The receiving corps gives him plenty of help. Charlie Becker has been one of the breakout names in the conference, catching 19 passes for 370 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 19.5 yards per catch. He’s also projected as a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Indiana also has Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh giving the offense another dangerous option. Marsh has 16 receptions for 221 yards and three touchdowns, filling the void left when Omar Cooper Jr. was drafted to the NFL.
The backfield brings another layer of pressure. Indiana uses a two-man rotation with Lee Bebee Jr. and Turbo Richard.
Bebee has handled more of the workload, carrying 71 times for 398 yards and three touchdowns. Richard has been just as explosive in fewer touches, with 50 carries for 383 yards and four scores.
Richard is averaging more than seven yards per rush and has also chipped in as a receiver, catching two passes for 43 yards. He had an injury scare in the Wildcats game against Northwestern, but he was listed as probable on the availability report. With Richard out, Bebee Jr. went off for 203 yards and a touchdown against Northwestern.
The Indiana defense is the other side of the story, and it has been just as overwhelming. Bryant Haines, now in his third season as defensive coordinator, has built the unit into the centerpiece of the Hoosiers’ identity.
“They're front seven on defense is as good as there is in America,” Schiano said of Haines' defense. "He's just done a remarkable job."
Kansas State transfer Tobi Osunsanmi headlines the group. He has three sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in just four games, and Rutgers pursued him heavily in the portal. He could also be an NFL draft pick in April.
Up front, defensive tackle Mario Landino is back after a strong sophomore season in 2025, when he posted five sacks and six tackles for loss. This year, he already has two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Linebacker Rolijah Hardy leads the team with 29 tackles, including three for loss, and he added a pick-six against Howard earlier this month.
"There's no weakness in this team, that's why they've won twenty straight," Schiano said.
Indiana has the résumé, the ranking and the momentum, and it comes into Piscataway with designs on repeating as Big Ten and national champions. For Rutgers, the challenge is obvious. For Schiano, the message is simple.
"Certainly a tall task, but one that we are very excited about," Schiano said. "Gonna be a great environment, looking forward to it."

Rutgers Fans Are Facing An Uncomfortable Greg Schiano Debate
Greg Schiano has helped make Rutgers more relevant again, but the conversation around his place in the program has gotten more complicated as the college football landscape keeps shifting. The pieces backdrop is simple enough: Rutgers has spent years trying to climb out of a long stretch of frustration, and Schianos return brought stability, higher expectations and a sense that the Scarlet Knights could finally start stacking progress instead of merely chasing it.
Indianas rise under Curt Cignetti has only sharpened the comparison. The Hoosiers have surged into a completely different tier, with a winning streak, a national championship and a run of improved records that has put Rutgers fans in the awkward position of measuring themselves against a peer program that now looks far ahead. For a fan base that has lived through so much losing, the question is no longer just whether Schiano has improved Rutgers, but whether improvement is enough in a college football world that keeps rewarding programs able to make a bigger leap. Rutgers Suddenly Has A Recruiting Surge Fans Needed To See
Rutgers basketball finally has some recruiting momentum to show for it, and it comes at a time when fans have been waiting for a sign that the program can consistently win the kind of battles that shape a future. The Scarlet Knights have landed three four-star prospects for their 2027 class, with RJ Moore, Brandon Woodard and Korey Francis all giving the staff a major boost on the trail.
The haul stands out even more because it comes against the backdrop of a program that has not been a regular NCAA tournament presence lately. Rutgers Has A Real Chance To Make Indiana Sweat At Home
Rutgers comes into Week 5 with a little momentum after earning its first win of the season, and the Scarlet Knights now get a chance to test themselves against a far more imposing opponent at home. Indiana arrives unbeaten and ranked No. 6, but there has already been a slight crack in the armor from a betting standpoint, since the Hoosiers have yet to cover the spread in any of their games so far.
The matchup puts some pressure on Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover to keep the offense on schedule against a Rutgers team that should be comfortable playing the spoiler role in front of its own crowd. With Rutgers getting respect as a home underdog and the spread leaning toward a tighter game than the rankings suggest, this one has the feel of a road test Indiana cannot afford to treat casually.
