Rutgers Football Stuns Fans by Canceling Annual Spring Game

Rutgers Football opts out of hosting their traditional spring game this offseason, raising questions about the strategic shift impacting college programs nationwide.

Rutgers football fans will have to adjust their spring plans this year. Head coach Greg Schiano announced that the annual spring game for 2026 is off the table. This decision, shared during the team’s pro day, reflects a growing trend in college football where teams are rethinking the value of these games.

While the spring game is canceled, Rutgers will still hold its spring training camp, starting on March 27th. Schiano didn't delve into specifics about the cancellation, but it's part of a broader movement across the country. The risk of injuries is a significant concern, and teams are wary of giving opponents extra film to study.

Last year’s unfortunate injury to wide receiver Famah Toure during the spring game is a stark reminder of the risks involved. Toure, who was poised for a breakout season in 2025, saw his plans derailed by a knee injury.

It’s not just Rutgers making this move. Eleven power four teams skipped their spring games last year, and the number is expected to rise. The timing of the transfer portal has also shifted, now only open for 15 days in the winter, easing some pressure on spring evaluations.

Rutgers fans will have to wait until fall to get a first look at the revamped defense and the quarterback battle between AJ Surace and Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan. This competition, which would typically be showcased in the spring game, adds an extra layer of anticipation for the upcoming season.

The defense, under a nearly new coaching staff, also promises to bring fresh dynamics to the field. While fans are eager to see these changes in action, they’ll need to hold their excitement a bit longer this year.
