Wisconsin’s fall has already included a World Series title for the Milwaukee Brewers, another successful Oktoberfest and a 5-3 football team. On Saturday, the Badgers get Rutgers at home, and the Daily Targum’s sports writers don’t see the Scarlet Knights changing the mood in Madison.
The predictions lean heavily Wisconsin, with every writer picking the Badgers and several expecting the game to get away from Rutgers early. The most common theme: Rutgers’ offense is too banged up and too limited to keep pace.
James Mertz, the head sports editor, twice went with Wisconsin by comfortable margins. He picked 27-7 and 31-13, pointing to Rutgers’ inability to slow down a mobile quarterback and the growing injury list around the Scarlet Knights.
In one prediction, he wrote, "No matter how good or bad Wisconsin is, it will always have Rutgers' number. The Scarlet Knights' defense hasn't stopped a mobile quarterback all season, and that won't change against the Big Ten's best, Colton Joseph.
With the injury report piling up and AJ Surace starting again, don't expect a strong offensive performance." In the other, he said, "It will be same old, same old, for the squad in Scarlet.
Most likely, without two starting linemen, a starting quarterback, two starting defensive backs and KJ Duff, it's hard to imagine a win for Rutgers. While Wisconsin has several quarterback issues of its own, this very well could be the best offensive performance for the Badgers, led by its running game, which has been surprisingly below average.
The offense may not score a touchdown, but I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt of garbage time."
He also noted the contrast between last week’s games, saying, "Both of these teams had very different Halloween games. Rutgers held its own against a struggling Michigan team while Wisconsin got its doors blown off by Iowa.
The Scarlet Knights looked a little better than anticipated, but this team is still very far from the top. With the pressure of having to go flawless to make a bowl game and the Badgers looking for a get-right game - don't hold your breath."
Justin Cheeseman also had Wisconsin winning comfortably, 31-14. He said, "The Badgers are coming off an embarrassing loss against Iowa, so they'll be extra motivated to get back on track this week.
With Rutgers' limited passing attack and questionable defense, Wisconsin should easily handle the Scarlet Knights at home. Rutgers will have to rely heavily on its run game for success, but it won't be enough in a multi-score loss."
Nathan Thompson saw a similar result, picking Wisconsin 31-13. "Presumably without Dylan Lonergan and potentially KJ Duff for yet another game, there is just simply no shot for Rutgers to be competitive especially as an offensive unit with AJ Surace at quarterback. I think the running game could save the team from being totally embarrassed but it won't be a pretty outcome whatsoever."
Jared Manne projected Wisconsin 31-17 and said, "It'll be a disappointing weekend for Rutgers as it faces another tough Big Ten opponent in the Wisconsin Badgers. The Knights played better than most expected last week against Michigan, but I don't believe any momentum will carry over this Saturday.
The Badgers' only losses this season have come against tough opponents, so I think they'll come out firing against a struggling Rutgers defense. With Dylan Lonergan's status still uncertain, I don't think the Knights will be able to muster enough against Wisconsin's tough defense."
Ryan Kindler was the most lopsided of the bunch, calling for Wisconsin 45-15. "Rutgers stands no chance against Wisconsin on the road, and this one will be a blowout. Despite it keeping it close with Michigan last week, Rutgers will come back down to earth against a good Wisconsin team."
Mike Silva also had the Badgers winning 31-17. "Wisconsin will be looking for a bounce-back after the blowout they suffered to Iowa last week.
Rutgers played Michigan closely but struggled against a Northwestern team on the road. The Badgers will clinch a bowl game on Saturday, and the Scarlet Knights' season will be all but over."
Matthew Risko split his two predictions between 28-14 and 42-7 for Wisconsin. On the first, he wrote, "Wisconsin has been pretty good this year, despite their shoutout loss against Iowa.
I think their offense will find its groove, and I expect quarterback Colton Joseph to be the difference-maker in this game with his rushing ability." On the second, he said, "It's hard to see the Rutgers offense can find any momentum against one of the best defenses in the conference with a backup quarterback who hasn't looked great all season.
Wisconsin could potentially turn AJ Surace into mince meat by the end of the second quarter. I don't see this one being competitive at all."
Overall, the message from the Targum staff is clear: Wisconsin is expected to handle Rutgers, and the Scarlet Knights will need a major turnaround to make this one interesting.

Rutgers Faces A Wisconsin Test That Could Get Uncomfortable Fast
Rutgers is heading into a Big Ten matchup with Wisconsin, and the Badgers arrive at 5-3 with a profile that still feels a little hard to pin down. Luke Fickell is in his fourth season and has steadied the program compared with where it was a year ago, while second-year offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes has overseen an attack that can look dangerous one week and uneven the next.
The personnel is there for Wisconsin to make this a difficult afternoon, starting with quarterback Colton Joseph and a backfield built around Darrion Dupree and Abu Sama III. The receiving group of Eugene Hilton Jr., Chris Brooks Jr. and Tyrell Henry gives the Badgers options on the perimeter, and the defense brings its own edge with Sebastian Cheeks, Mason Posa and Matt Jung, leaving Rutgers with plenty to sort through before this one is over.
